DO NOT SIGN UP USING hotmail, outlook, gmx, sbcglobal, att, bellsouth or email.com. They delete our forum signup emails.

A note to old forum members...
I receive numerous requests from people who can no longer log in because their accounts were deleted. As mentioned in the forum FAQ, user accounts are deleted if you haven't logged in for the past 6 months. If you can't log in, then create a new forum account. If you don't get an error message, then check your email account for an activation message. If you get a message stating that the email address is already in use, then your account still exists so follow the instructions in the forum FAQ for resetting your password.

Have you forgotten your password or have a new email address? Then read the forum FAQ for details on how to reset it.

Any email requests for "can't log in anymore" problems or "lost my password" problems will be deleted. Read the forum FAQ and follow the instructions there - that's what we have one for...

  • Returning Visitors

If you are a returning visitor who never received your confirmation email, then odds are your email provider is blockinig emails from our server. The only thing that can be done to get around this is you will have to try creating another forum account using an email address from another domain.

If you are a returning visitor to the forum and can't log in using your old forum name and password but used to be able to then chances are your account is deleted. Purges of the databases are done regularly. You will have to create a new forum account and you should be all set.

what did you wrench on today??

Just watched the video on Youtube; looks like a pretty cool bike! You need to figure out how to strap the camera to your body (or the bike) and take us all for a ride on it!

I'll take you for a ride! But I'll need a plate to take it on the road...maybe around the property!

Checked the valves on the 82 barn find. Ordered up 5 new shims. Went and picked up some cheap Supertech 10W40 for a flush when I finally get the thing running and some Rotella for the GS1000.

IMG_20180816_120004245.jpg Removed Fuse box, epoxied melted slot, polished fuse holders cleaned and replaced connectors... Spent 2 days cleaning and replacing connectors along with installing a used SH775 R/R... Found some broken wires in the aft end turn signals... 38 year old motorcycles have lots of wires....

Yesterday morning before leaving for work (still currently at work), I installed a 804 front tire on the VSTROM in prep for riding in Arkansas in a few weeks. I also stuck a 804/805 combo set of spares into trashbags tied them off and put them in the rafters for future use.

Justin that things sick! Once my GS450's done I'll bring it up! What is the exhaust from or did you make it?
Thanks Sam! You coming up to Vermont anytime soon??? GMR???
That is a custom exhuast But not a big fan of it... Going to be making a custom 2 to 2 setup. Gets a tag on Thursday... I'll be running it then.

Put a 7inch Tucklite (DOT complaint)in the Gs1000 this morning after work. Hope it doesnt ruin the classic look too much. Yhe 7 inch incandescent light that was on the was pretty awful in the dark.

Not really "wrenching" but text message troubleshooting with Justin Redmanson (some of you have meet him at Brown County).

He rode ('08 Triumph Tiger 1050) to Jacksonville FL, Iron Butt style.
Then from there to SanDiego (Coast To Coast in under 50hours).
Spends 10 days days there, has some canyon rides.
THen goes up the Pacific coast some, then to Colorado for a couple days.
THen rides to home (another IronButt), stopps at gas station about a mile from home ... and bike will not start... low voltage.

So, stator ohm check time ...
Phase to phase okay, but phase to ground - 0.3 and 0.5ohm and such. He did check and his is suppose to be open-infinite like ours.

Apparently that heat in the desert (107) and other S.W. places (upper 90s), for days at a time, did in the stator.
So, I guess, newer bike is not a quarentee against having problems.

>>Later note: Justin informs me that his ride thru the desert was 111 - 117degF.

Two Wheel Texan.....
You know of Focus Frenzy....? He (Leon) used to be quite active here on GSR.

Yes sir I've gotten a few GS parts from him over the years. His current 2 wheeled squeeze is a BMW 310GS but as far as I know he still has a bunch of bikes from a Kawa ZRX, to a GS still.

I've been lurking on the tiger 1050 forum for a few days and I also noticed that there seems to be quite a bit of the same old electrical problems we all experience with our GSes. The Triumph stators are supposed to be cooled with oil but the tops of the stator do not retain the cooling long enough and tend to burn. They also have R/R troubles like our GSes. Maybe just not as frequently as they are no where near the age of our old steeds.

The R/R failure frequency on 2006 to 2009 Triumph Daytona 675's was actually so high that the factory issued a recall! The original shunt R/R was replaced with a Mosfet (but still shunt type).

On those models the R/R was mounted directly behind the engine, and about 2 inches away from the exhaust mid-pipe (which went up behind the engine and under the seat to the silencer below the tail). On later models the R/R was moved to the front of the bike inside the fairing.

My son has a 2007 Daytona 675 and I was riding the bike when the R/R failed and the engine cut out after the battery had drained, so I had first-hand experience of the failure!

So even a quarter of a century after our bikes saw the light of day, R/R failures are still commonplace on "modern" machines!

Almost done converting an old Ford camper from an in tank fuel pump to an inline pump. One of Ford's stupidest designs by far. Just got a new fuel pump in the mail for a 2003 Honda twin. I'm getting tired of fuel pumps in general. And at my age, I'm quickly learning to say no.
