An updated picture of the old girl that I have been working on. I need to change the handlebars, and get some stainless lines. Now to fine tune the old girl.

That is the strangest-looking seat I've seen. Satisfy my curiosity; what fairing is that?

Way too much... started with the rototiller and farmall A Saturday and a go kart and ATV today. Not to mention two chairs and a host of other things in between.

Actually, cut a hole in one of the GK's fairing dash plates to mount my USB outlets. Oh, what interesting circumstances the 21st century has brought.

Well, not too much 'wrenching', but ...

I think I stole an air compressor.

Ingersoll Rand, Charge Air PRO, Model 5E6VA.

Had to grease up a shoehorn to get it in, but it fits. :encouragement:

On Mrs. Steve's suggestion, removed a stud from the unfinished bathroom wall and came in from the side.
There is room to rotate it under the stairs for replacing the belt.

A newer version of this has slightly higher SCFM, and is $979.
I got this at a garage sale a mile from my house for "considerably less". :-\\\

Installed some pieces of old mud flap material under the feet, but will need to find something a little more absorbent, as the floor drums while the compressor is running. The compressor itself is not all that loud, but the little bit of vibration it causes definitely resonates in the floor. Got it installed, wired and running by about midnight last night.

Also got some free metal shelves from one of 'my' hospitals. Set them in place, but might move them a bit before we decide the location is 'final'.

Then we said "hang it all" and went for a ride. :encouragement:

Looks great akckhim!
I have always admired that bike!!!

That will come in real handy Steve!
And some shelves to boot.

Finished putting the front end on my L late yesterday afternoon.
Today I went out and rechecked all my work for any loose bolts/nuts and looking for a new place to mount my horns.

Then I went out for my first ride of 2015.
Small shakedown run, longer shakedown run, then just enjoyed some curvy country roads.

It is a Hannigan Grand Tour, I gotta say that it is the first one that I have run across. The seat may be strange, but my butt likes it.

Strip and dip on a Honda rebel carb for a co-worker, brought it in to work today, and will have a pair from an 07 GS500 twin to do soon.

Depending on the "vintage-ness" of the seat, it was either made by Mayer or Russell, but both were sold as "Day-Long" Saddles. I don't remember exactly when it happened, but Mayer retired and sold the business to Russell, so it's essentially the same product.

I had a Mayer seat on my KZ1300 and loved it. Had a Russell seat on my ZN1300. It was OK, but not as good as the Mayer.

In the workshop - re-soldered the shoddy soldering job that had been done on the XS tank nipples. Not pretty, but should be solid now. I might go up a size in nipple, to accomodate a wider range of fuel taps.

Thanks for that.
The lowers that seem to be designed to accomodate the Suzuki cases, are what caught my eye. I'm currently putting together a fairing kit for the '80 bike based around a BMW K-RT fairing, but the BMW lowers will need a bit of re-working. It's handy to know what was out there, that might be a better fit.

I'll keep my eyes open for one of those. Of course, nowadays many cruisers come with the Amazingly Wide-Ass seat as standard, to accomodate the more portly gentleman. I was standing in a dealer's recently, gob-smacked at the size of the saddles on late-model bikes.

The saddle is a Russell cycle prod. Fall River Mills Ca., yes it is a day long.

Removed the lowers to the fairing and did a carb sync and adjusted the pilots to lean best, smoothed it out some. Before the sync the rods in the carbtune descended in a pretty even ramp down from #4 to #2, after the sync #2/3 slight up bubble.

Removed the bars and straightened them out then tweaked the angle of the grips to suit me better and rein-staled them. Then did a compression test. Not so hot, but could be a lot worse, 90, 90, 95, 100. Going to run a couple tanks through it and change all the fluids again. Looks like Newport this weekend, then do another compression test just for kicks before I do a valve adjust and another sync. Should be ready for the rally then.

just finished this stuff up on saturday. woo clutches. did timing belt service while it was apart.

Workshop task today: After re-doing the badly soldered tank unions, filled the tank with diesel and left it overnight to make sure of fuel-tightness, not just to check the soldering, but also the home-made blanking plate that's over the original petcock hole.
So far, tight as a drum.

Good luck on "finding" one.

They are custom-made and not cheap.

While one is relatively unlikely to appear this side of the pond, it's not unknown for such things to crop up in the most unexpected places. Plenty of US-registered GSs were imported here over the last several decades, many of them with full-on touring gear fitted.

Grimly, you can Send Russell your seat pan and they will build you the seat, it is a little expensive, but you would like the seat I think.

Chased charging gremlins all day yesterday. Ended up soldering the stator wires, end of problem.

Me spending hundreds of dollars plus shipping (and the shipping + duty is often the killer on a new item) on a seat is about as likely as sprouting wings, to be honest. I have many more pressing things to spend the money on, but the concept of the winged seat rang a bell, and I read this earlier...
http://www.diymotorcycleseat.com/modify_2.htm
And section 5 on this page...
http://www.diymotorcycleseat.com/modify_3.htm
However, without essential sewing machine skills to make a proper job of it, that also remains unlikely. Otoh, a proper Russell seat might crop up, but I'm not holding my breath.

Workshop today: Fitted the rebuilt seat from the other GS and fitted a new Givi-copy top box (trunk).
The bike nearly fell over with the shock of actually being 'improved' a bit.

Measured the clutch bits out to check spec and then retorqued clutch nut to fix a rattle before it progressed too far.

Installed a XTRE on the BK today... Little splicing for allot of gains! Maximum ignition advance in all gears with best fuel mapping for all gears. Speed limiter had been removed, true top speed with current gearing is 197mph however I'll never go that fast so a new gear sprocket setup is on it's way in... Change the sound of the exhaust and the intake, IT sounds MEAN. This 1340 is a true brute in the first 3 gears now. Full advance with fuel de-restriction means an extra 18 whp in the lower gears and 21 wftlbs...

INtsall locations..:

Today I decided to do something about the too-hard seat foam on my GS750B. The main problem is that I can feel vibration through the seat leading to "restless butt syndrome" :-&

Luckily I had put a Saddlemen seat cover on about 6 years ago and fastened it with screws and washers so it was easy to take the cover off. To "soften" the foam I cut a series of 7/16" holes through it on a 1" x 1" grid pattern only on the area where I sit. The tool I used to cut the holes was a piece of 7/16" tubing, from a light fixture mount, that I sharpened the edge of by spinning it in the drill press and running a file along it. Then used my cordless drill to made the holes.

Put it all together and now the seat is noticeably softer. But not crazy soft but soft enough that the vibes are gone. Here are some pics.

New Old Stock Conti Blitz fitted and coat of paint slapped on the trailer bracket.
It looks blue but will dry black.
Inspection revealed no wear on the final drive splines at 250K and counting. This wheel came off another '79 850 with the black drive plate, so no wear on that, either. Normal lube was used - Castrol Moly Grease, as has been used for the past 25 years.

The wife wanted a fire plug for the yard. She wants train the dog to pee on it.....due to its immense mass, ill probably only have to relocate it in the yard 100 times:p
Spent a couple of unpleasant hours with a grinder / wirewheel removing much paint. The yellow dust in the garage even outnumbered the pollen on the cars as of late.
Primer on, red paint soon.
