If you get a message stating that the email address is already in use, then your account still exists so follow the instructions in the forum FAQ for resetting your password.

Have you forgotten your password or have a new email address? Then read the forum FAQ for details on how to reset it.

Any email requests for "can't log in anymore" problems or "lost my password" problems will be deleted. Read the forum FAQ and follow the instructions there - that's what we have one for...

What do I lube the splines with? GS1000G

  • Thread starter Thread starter Guest

I used the 9% molly grease on the splines (removed the old grease with paper), and put ceramic paste on the axle and the other things on the axle.

And there I got a message from Ebay that the seller cancelled my order for the loctite... Because of a "Problem with the address".

Edit: Apparently they say the product is restricted from export.

Got any BMW motorcycle dealers in your area? If so, I'd pay them a visit. BMW is big on shaft drive bikes and should have a solid recommendation. My recommendation earlier was taken in part from a thread from AV Rider about BMW servicing.

If I get my bike ridable before friday I am going to Troms?, fairly sure they have a BMW dealer. In my town they don't have any sellers.

ever used castrol optimoly?

I've definitely used a Castrol moly grease, but they change the names in different markets.
I'm sure the Castrol moly grease was for fork lift chains or some such heavy duty application.

But does this contain enough mos2?

That CASTROL MOLUB-ALLOY stuff is not suitable for the splines. It's an assembly lube and for avoiding fretting corrosion. There is zero moly in it.

Its what the BMW Manual calls for for drive shaft splines.

The rear wheel is not a typical spline like on a drive shaft. For the wheel a moly paste product with at least 50% moly is strongly suggested. Both the common Honda and Loctite moly greases/paste suggested earlier in this thread contain at least 60% moly.

Dang, this has got confusing. Parts house grease is from 4% to 9% Moly, that's what I used last time, but kind'f wish I hadn't. The Honda M60 is 60% Moly, but is discontinued. Loctite has some, 65% Moly, comes in oil, or aerosol, some says for assembly, some is for anti-seize. Jet-lube MP50 that is 50%, Is 50% enough? This ain't near as simple as it ought to be. The Honda M60 still available on ebay, guess I'll order some, but thought there would be something down at the parts store that should work fine.

If you have a BMW dealer nearby, ask them for the same stuff that they lube the clutch splines on old airheads with. That will work fine.

Why do you wish you hadn't? People seem to think its fine for a one time use.

Where do you find M60 on ebay? Whenever I see it, the listing is like "M60 / M77". M77 is the "new version" and it has way less moly.

I have found it mildly infuriating trying to find a product with adequate amoutns of moly. So many doesn't list contents, and its been a lot of data sheets and similar to decode what is in it.

When I find something its obscenly expensive to import and they might not send it. Now I am slightly worried it is somehow illegal in Norway.

Maybe I should just ride down to the UK and pick some up.

Its what the BMW Manual calls for for drive shaft splines.

The Molub-Alloy name seems to cover several grades.
Typical marketing shoolbit is all - why can't they just label it "Great Moly Spline Grease for Tanks", "Simple Moly Grease for Ordinary Joes", and "Moly Assembly Lube for Tinkerers".

Here's another Beemer offering definitely for splines.
https://www.motorworks.co.uk/vlive/Shop/Parts.php?T=6&Q=castrol+moly&search=SEARCH

It seems the Molub-Alloy is only for assembly, as Nessism points out.

On the other hand, here's the proper stuff for heavy duty applications...
https://www.broughtonlubricants.co.uk/castrol-aero-hf-585b-208-litre-drum
Ignore the 208L drum, there's a 400g cartridge for just a few quid.

Do you know how much the castrol aero hf has of moly? As in percentage?

Nope. Given the huge cost of a high concentration of moly, it explains why the 60% stuff that Honda sold is so expensive for a small tube.
A quick perusal of safety data sheets for some of the Molub-Alloy products doesn't reveal much.
Whatever, I'm fairly sure a small percetage of Molybdenun Disulphide is more than adequate if carried out regularly -like every tyre change (and assuming the rear drive splines are the good ones to start with).
