What exhaust is this?

Got a chance to buy this stock exhaust system and not sure it is what the seller is saying that it is. He states that it came off of a 1978 GS1000. Did the 1978 GS1000 have the crossover pipe? Mine did not have the stock exhaust when I got it and I would like to have a stock set.+


Anyone know if these look like the original? They also have a flange missing. Can that be put back without cutting the pipe?

The GS1000 has the crossover pipe.
AND text on the end of the muffler, stating the model.
Does it say anything on the side, at the end of the mufflers ?

New flanges can be fabricated and welded on, but that will
most likely not be very pretty.
What exactly is missing/damaged ?

As stated there should be info stamped into the muffler.
They do look like GS1000 pipes.
I would look into re-welding a flange as opposed to cutting the pipe.
Don't know what they are made of. Steel? Magnesium? Aluminum?

Can someone with a 1978 GS1000 confirm that it has the crossover pipe? These are almost too cheap to pass up, even if they are for a later year!

The parts fishe clearly shows the crossover. It also shows that the outer pipes are removable and the flanges are removable. You just need to source a flange and the half moon pieces if you don't have them.

My bad i think ? I'm Dutch, must be the language / translation.
I was thinking by flange you meant the thick end of the downpipe that
goes into the head.
If it's just the flange clamp / ribbed ring with 2 holes, 3 of those visible
on the picture you posted, that's missing, this seems like a good buy.
Make sure the pipes are not rotted through on the underside.

You can fit GS1100G and GK alloy flange too if you cannot find a stock steel one.

That's the same stamping as mine Ron. However, I sourced my set from another person as mine was sold to me with a crappy MAC turnout system. Couldn't get them off quick enough.

$75 ? LOL the 2 cover plates are worth more.
Let me correct myself, that's not a good buy, if they are
half decent looking that's a STEAL.

Yeah, The pictures that he sent show that the muffler bottoms look good. Will know better tomorrow when I look at them. Will be nice to put stock pipes back on since I am currently doing a restoration on it!

Well I got the pipes! They have some rust underneath the #2 & #3 collector area and 2 dimed-sized spots under the right muffler where they are spot-welded. Other than some slight yellowing on the head pipes, they look GREAT! No dents or scrapes anywhere. Going to have to get one flange and a couple of the half-moon spacers and they will be complete.

Now the rest of the story......Seems the guy that I purchased them from had went to an auction with the intention of bidding on a 1978 GS1000 with 8k miles. The bike had a Kerker header on it and sold for $2200 to another person. Then they sold these pipes, the original ones from the bike. They guy that bought the bike did not even bid on them, and they sold for the whopping sum of $12.00 So....guys buys them for $12 and lists them on Facebook marketplace for $150 with no takers. Just last night he relisted them for $75 and I was the first one who called! LUCKY ME! Can't wait to see how they look on the bike!
