What Front end will fit a 1983 750ES? GSXR?

Actually in pretty good cond but who knows... maybe I'll have a play with this one...

The brake lines, tyre, fork springs & seals will prob need attention so thinking maybe I just switch out the whole front end...

What fitment options do I have?

Would any of these fitment options give me a matching rear wheel to use (I saw a 160 fitted on a late 80's GSXR wheel recently in a thread)?

If possible let me know which are USD & which regular.

Presumably it's a little easier on this bike that's made for a 16" front wheel as no clearance probs associated with going to a 17".

Just about anythng you want to use can be made to work. I'm running '88 GSXR wheels and '95 GSXR forks in a CBR954RR triple. The CBR triple is stepped so you gain about 3/4" extra clearance. The front wheel is a 3.5" and the rear a 4.5" with a 160. Spacing of the CBR triple is the same as pre '95 GSXR stuff so the rotors and calipers line up perfectly. My 700 is basically the same as the '83 750.

What wheels, tires ,forks are you looking to run?

6 spoke Early 1st Gen Gixxer (18"x4" rear) 150/60-18 or possibly 160/60-18

3 spoke late 1st Gen Gixxer (18"x4.5) 160/60-18 or 170/60-18

3 spoke 17 wheels which also come in 4.5 or 5.5 rear sizes.

1st Gen normal forks and brakes (4 pot)

2nd Gen USD forks and can go to 6 pot Hyabusa.

You can get most all of these combos to work.

Billy's bike is bad ass, I just wish he would paint that front fender .

I know you've done a lot of research. I'm just starting. Really just looking at options.

I would say ideal would be a 160 rear & front radial's. 17" I guess as that's stock rear & not too different from 16" stock front.

Really like the look of USD but I guess would also go RSU (right side up.. :lol: ) depending on availability & costs etc.

I have plenty of time to think about this & mess with it - I'm in no hurry

Billy - Did you need extra clearance given the original 16" front wheel? I must say your bike looks "poised" perfectly.

Thanks Jim. The whole thing is going to get repainted when I pull the engine out. I already have the graphics from Reproduction Decals.

I already had Ray prep my block for some Cosworth 12:1 pistons and I'm about to send an NOS head to him to work his magic on. The head is brand new, just needs valves and rockers. If he can find oversized valves I may have him do that. I'll be running a G7 intake and either a G4 or G5 exhaust cam. I already have RS34 flatslides that probably offer more bang for the buck than any other mod you can do.

The bike has probably lost around 45 lbs with the mods so far.

Sounds like you are going to step it up a few notches .

Are you running a 180 on the rear or is that too big for the 700E handling?

I have about 3 more weeks in the current semester (taking 3 classes), but I'm chomping at the bit to finish my ED 1st Gen conversion then get my GSXR streetfighter going. Love the big headlamp and USD look :lol:.

Dan, originally I had an '88 front end on it and it was too short for my bike. Perfect for a 550 but on my bike I banged the pipe a few times. It's flattened so I'll be trying to get that fixed. It's too nice of a pipe to replace. With the new front end it's not a problem.

As for your questions in the PM I'll try to go over most of the things here in case anyone else does any of these mods.

Up front I ran into a couple of problems to deal with. First was the upper stem bearing. The CBR uses a larger bearing so I was going to have to either alter the neck of come up with a bearing. Someone here had posted a link to a bearing that fits the bill but the link I have is dead. None of the local bearing shops could help. The inner diameter of my stock bearing was too small to fit the stem. I tried a couple of machine shops here but they wouldn't touch the bearing. I came home and took my dremel to it with one of the barrel sander attachments and got it to where I needed it. The dremel barely cuts the bearing so you don't have to worry about taking too much material off. It probably took me 15 minutes working my way around the bearing before I got a snug fit on the stem. You just have to be careful and keep the dremel planted flush on the bearing.

The second problem was headlight brackets. They are tough to find to fit inverted forks. I could have use something cheesy but I got a set of CNC machined brackets from Wild Hair Accessories in AZ. http://www.whaccessories.com/Head%20lights.htm If you decide to go with them you want 50mm top and bottom.

I had to weld a steering stop to the front of the neck, dead center.

The gauges take a little rewiring to do but not a big deal if you can follow a wiring diagram, which I'm sure isn't a problem for you.

In the rear I used the bearings from the 700 wheel, new though. The bearing support in the hub is my 700 part with a little pipe from a bottle jack handle JB Welded to it to have it end up the same length as the GSXR piece. The epoxy is only needed to hold it in place for assembly. Spacers and the bearing support between the sprocket carrier and the hub is Kat 600 as is the caliper hanger. The 750 support is probably the same as the Kat, I just bought parts I thought I needed and used them. The brake torque arm was moved to the bottom to accommodate the GSXR caliper.

Everything ends up being a tight squeeze between the swingarm. The tire has more than enough clearance, but the axle area is too tight. At first I would have to pry things apart to get everything in. Eventually I ground as much material as I could off the outside surface of the caliper hanger where the axle goes through. Then I took a bottle jack and spread the swingarm to get more clearance. I ended up spreading it close to an inch so when it relaxed I had about 1/4" more clearance.

If I've missed anything I'll be happy to answer specifics.

I'm running a 160, I don't think you could get a 180 in the swingarm.

Yeah, the USD fork and the big headlight looks good. But then I know you're partial to the look, so am I. I would never use anything else.

I've seen some people adapt the stock stuff. Back when I did mine it was going to be trial and error. It was about '93 when I started the serious mods. No GSR, no Ebay, and no internet for me. I was on my own so I went with stuff I knew would work. The Gixxer caliper has the mouting point for the torque arm opposite of the GS caliper so I had to run it under the swingarm. It does lower the center of gravity a bit so I guess it's a plus.

Check with Kingofvenus, Dee. He's switched to a 4.5" wheel from a late model Kat. I think he used most of his stock stuff.

Did you consider a GSXR swinger or will it not fit?

P.S on the caliper you just kinda get sucked into it. U need a GSXR disk, which means GSXR hanger, which means GSXR rer caliper which is mostly 90's GSXR parts. The calipers have the brake arm hole located for a lower mount.

GSXR750. It was available and like I said this was years before Ebay and other sources. I'm not sure of the year on the gauges. I picked up the tach and speedo seperately as well as the bracket. I think it was all second generation.

I have a '93 banana swingarm that I was going to use but I got a Works shock at a bargain basement price for the stocker so I went with that. I can always brace it the way Yosh used to.

Very similar. I have an old magazine with a feature called Power of the Poconos. There is an '83 750 with a swingarm braced the way they did Schwantz's in '85.

My rear brake caliper is up topside like stock. '89 1100 gsxr caliper bracket. And an early 90's 600 katana caliper, I had a 600 wheel on it up till this month. Homemade torque arm, I cut the ends off the stock arm and welded them to a piece of round (1/2 inch O.D. I think) tubing. Had to bend it slightly when I installed the new wheel.

Well..... I made a choice. Got a good deal on a GSXR 1100 front end complete with brakes, rotors & 17" wheel conversion.
I've had a measure up & I will lose about 1" clearance over stock giving me about 4.5", maybe 4" with sag.

Going to get the clutch back in it & fire it up to make sure all nasty noises go away before I try to mount it up...

Couple of problems - Rear wheel is a 5.5" - has a 170 mounted on it... Reckon it will fit (or can I mount a 160 on that wheel?) If not I guess I'll trade it for a 4.5", sure there are lots of GSXR guys looking to trade up.....

Rear brakes - I have a rotor, that's it... guess I'll have to look into that. Dee - what rotor did you use with your setup?

If the wheel is going on the 750 I don't think you'll get a 170 in there and have any room left. My 160 leaves about 1/4" on each side of the swingarm. The speedo should drive off the front wheel unless it's fairly new. What year is it?
