my bike is all stock now for as much as i can tell. my air filter is pretty dirty and was gona replace it...the place i went to get my coils from yesterday only had a foam filter, but had no paper filters. he said to get the foam cuz it was cheap (30 bucks).
i told him i'd pass...i dont really care for foam filters, i've seen them come apart before.

another thing, a seal on the cover of my air box (the seal on the end where the chrome cover goes on the left side) is deteriorating...so i figured if there was another option like a whole different style of set up like individual filters with re-usable filters, i might consider that.

if not....its ok..i'll just shut up and fork out the 65 bucks they want at a suzuki shop for a stock paper filter.

ps, its a 1980 gs850G bike

thanks!

Most of the 850's used a foam filter stock. They work fine, just clean it every 6-10K miles. The end caps CLEAN IT & apply a bead of silicon in the end cap. Install lightly DO NOT tighten untill after the silicon has cured.
You can find a K&N type of filter for it also, their should be a foam strip between the filter & the base plate

well your options are:
stock suzuki
aftermarket stock paper
K&N replacement for stock (fits in stock air box)
and you can go with pods
pods are made by several differant companies besides K&N.

the K&N stock replacement requires mild jetting adjustment in some cases, while Pods will require re-jetting, and in some cases have other drawbacks.

You can pick up a Uni Filter, which is an OEM replacement foam filter, for about $17. I got one for mine after the original disintegrated. I got it at a local motorcycle salvage & parts shop. Fits and works just like the original.

thanks for the info guys!

im new to all this, and im gona have to do some research online to figure out what pods are.
im kinda assuming individual air filters that just come off the carbs?
if so, how could this need a jet adjustment? are bike carbs really that tempermental or will these air filters really lean up the mixture requireing more fuel?

thanks for info!

With my gs850l, I got a Stock replacement UNI filter, I use UNI filters on all my toys, IMO they filter much more then K&N. For example I used to have a perfectly new, properly oiled K&N on my 4-wheeler, I took it off to clean it and there was a dust film all the way in my intake boot. I cleaned it and put on a UNI filter, ever sence I've never had that problem. Also you shouldnt have to do a jetting change with a stock replacement.-darren

I've also got a UNI foam filter in my '80 850. has worked great since I bought it. just make sure you buy UNI filter oil and UNI filter cleaner (rather than generic stuff).

K&N is probably great , but I have not the $$$
dont think you'd notice too much of a difference though.

Stick with the foam like the stock filter.

You can get 'em in downtown Indy at Cycle Recycle II:

If the foam is still good on the stock one, just clean it and re-oil it.

You do need to make sure the side covers (the bits covered in chrome) on the airbox are very well sealed. The stock seals in these are almost certainly turned to dust by now. Air leaks here will make an 850 run very, very lean. I glued in heavy-duty weatherstripping foam in mine. The silicone trick sounds like it might work, too, if you're very careful.

Also make sure there aren't any other intake leaks:

If you want more performance, it's a lot easier and cheaper to just buy a bigger bike than to fart around with rejetting, pods, and a new exhaust. Jetting kits simply aren't available for 850s, so you'd be doing a lot of experimenting on your own with pipes, jets, etc.

Stick to stock intake, jetting, and exhaust, and concentrate on getting your 850 running right.

I don't seem to have any trouble keeping up on my 850...

That's for sure.

Still looking for a stock airbox and exhasut for my 83 1100E if anyone has 'em!!! Fu#@in' pods.
