Have you forgotten your password or have a new email address? Then read the forum FAQ for details on how to reset it.

Any email requests for "can't log in anymore" problems or "lost my password" problems will be deleted. Read the forum FAQ and follow the instructions there - that's what we have one for...

I finally got me 81 gs1000g running smooth with the exception of bogging down and popping with full throttle (Ive been riding nice and easy to avoid it) and a high idle on the first startup of the day but then it calms down after about 20-30 seconds. I will be doing some fine tuning today but i just want to know what MPG i should be getting. i filled up my 4 gallon tank and ran out at 66 miles. That gives me a 16.5 MPG. I was hoping for at lease a 25-30. What the heii?

Your bike should get in the range of 40 mpg. Seems you have a tuning and/or maintenance issues. The high idle suggests a lean condition, but beyond that I won't venture to guess.

More details please. What have you done to it? What mods are on it?

I don't own a bike that will get 40mpg with me riding it. That said, your numbers are DRASTICALLY lower than they should be.

Something is defiantly wrong my 1186 big valve n cam 38mm flatslide oil motor gets 45-48 mpg.

No mistake I've checked it several times. It cruises with so little throttle input. I was amazed the first few times I checked it. Now if you run it harder or a lot of in town stop and go it does drop some.Plus it only weighs 465#

My 85 GS1150 gets 5 mpg and my 98 Bandit gets the same but you should be getting at least 35 mpg with yours.

That's not so far off, either. I've found that power-tuned engines will return better economy - provided you don't use the extra power, and that's hard to resist. However, if you drive them in semi-eco mode, they really show the benefits of better breathing.

I have Moxy pods, i have gone through the carbs and cleaned them out and replaced parts with K&L kits. I have pulled them apart to find out what size jets i have. My pilot jet is fairly big. the jet that came in my kit has a pin hole in it and the jet i have is much bigger.

I have had the bike for a couple months so i am trying to get the bugs out.

These are my pilot jets. the one on the left says its a 30 and the right one came in my K&L kit and says its a 40. Did some one drill out the 30?

It is usually a mistake to use "carb kits", but it appears that in your case, it might have been necessary. Those "30" pilots have been drilled.

That X-6 jet is not your main, that is the needle jet. The main jet screws into the end of the needle jet (which is also known as an "emulsion tube"). Stock numbers will range from about 95 to 120, depending on what bike you have, but we don't have a clue. (Hint, hint)

I was gonna agree with you but first page it's an 81 gs1000g

I don't understand the "first page" comment, but yeah, I caught the bike in my first reply (post #6), but forgot it by the time he mentioned all the mods to the bike.

It's still a hint to put your bike in your sig, so us old forgetful farts don't have to keep scrolling back to the top of the page or look up a posting history to see if it is ever mentioned. Also nice to update your location.

Oh, yeah, ... "first page" means that you still have the default setting of 10 posts per page. Update your preferences, you can show up to 40 per page, making it MUCH easier to read longer threads. :-\\\

Haha doh! Updated my location, thought I did that.... and I see, yep my comment wouldn't make sense then! haha. Steve, what kinda mpg do you get on your 850s? Mines completely stock, 2.5turns out and I'm only getting about 33-35 at best. 60K miles and i shift minimum 4k-5k...

Just to add data to the MPG question.
On MY GS850 - used mostly for commuting at 45-50 MPH - hauling MY 300# carcass around.
Windscreen and small saddlebags (holds lunch, thermos, & some misc)
13 miles at a time - twice daily. Sometimes more and a few quick joy rides.
Throttle use is reserved and I shift around 4000 ...
I get 42-44 MPG ever time I refill. Usually it is in the 42-42.5 range.
Just my experience this year over about 2500 miles.

My GS850 , ridden like the older guy I am, turns 40-45 mpg, depending on headwinds, etc. Minimum 40.

My GS850, ridden like the 17 year old I still am in my head, regularly returns 36~38mpg, but I have a whole lot of fun doing it.
At the moment, I'm more-or-less finalising the jetting, so doing a couple of tankfuls of reasonably steady, sedate riding to see how good it can get. Over the autumn, with lots of fallen leaves and the colder weather to come, with occasionally slippy roads, I'll be turning in some better economy figures anyway.
