A Special Note about Email accounts!
DO NOT SIGN UP USING hotmail, outlook, gmx, sbcglobal, att, bellsouth or email.com. They delete our forum signup emails.

A note to old forum members...
I receive numerous requests from people who can no longer log in because their accounts were deleted. As mentioned in the forum FAQ, user accounts are deleted if you haven't logged in for the past 6 months. If you can't log in, then create a new forum account. If you don't get an error message, then check your email account for an activation message. If you get a message stating that the email address is already in use, then your account still exists so follow the instructions in the forum FAQ for resetting your password.

Have you forgotten your password or have a new email address? Then read the forum FAQ for details on how to reset it.

Any email requests for "can't log in anymore" problems or "lost my password" problems will be deleted. Read the forum FAQ and follow the instructions there - that's what we have one for...

  • Returning Visitors

If you are a returning visitor who never received your confirmation email, then odds are your email provider is blockinig emails from our server. The only thing that can be done to get around this is you will have to try creating another forum account using an email address from another domain.

If you are a returning visitor to the forum and can't log in using your old forum name and password but used to be able to then chances are your account is deleted. Purges of the databases are done regularly. You will have to create a new forum account and you should be all set.

What should I expect ?

 GS 650E (82) Ok I have noticed an oil leak comming fro the lower head cyclinder 1 area. I suspect it is the head gasket (lower) gasket. I am considering doing the gasket change myself is this a major undertaking? Or is it a fairly easy change over? I have never attempted a repair of this magnitude and am debating whether or not to just take it to the shop at $85.00 per hr. Any Ideas and or suggestions. Any and all help would be greatly appreciated !!!

Thanks Dave (pic attatched)

It's a straightforward job if you take your time and read the manual. If it's your first time on something like this just make sure that you check everything very carefully eg cam timing before bolting things back together firm.

The guys on here will be only to willing to help - either in person if you've got someone local or via the GSR. Post the questions and they'll be answered!

Yes, it's a major undertaking, but as h-hog says you can do it as long as you are willing to take your time and and check everything as you go.

Get a camera, a photobucket account, and post lots of photos here, particularly if you have questions. Don't be afraid, just work smart.:)

If you take it to a shop, it will be about $150 or so for a gasket kit (their charge) and maybe 6 hours of billable labor. That puts it right about $650.

If you do it, figure about $100 for a gasket kit and whatever your time is worth to you. Add a few bucks if you need to buy a torque wrench. :o

Plus, if you do it, you will have the luxury of doing all the other stuff that should be done with that gasket kit, like changing the valve seals.
The shop might not do that if you only ask them to change the head gasket.
