On and Reserve only. The brass screw is the on and off screw. Back it out fuel flows, screw it in fuel stops.
Fuel gauge line and fuel line

Fuel gauge intake line is brass, the lowest line is the fuel line. There is no vacuum line
I'm really just curious I am going to buy a stock vacuum activated petcock

It's an oddball. Saw one on a 1980 550E that Salty Monk fixed up.

Fuel guage line on a petcock????? Are you sure????? where is the float???? surely not in the petcock.

The upper pointed fitting is the vacuum line, the larger one is the fuel line. It's an odd looking petcock for sure.

Thats just it with this petcock, it's so off no one knows anything about it. Again the brass fitting has a line that goes to the fuel gauge float under the tank and it has a recieving fitting along with the electrical wires that go to the fuel amount gauge on the gauge cluster. The other fitting goes to the carbs for fuel, thats whats so crazy about this thing.
The fuel gauge float is in the tank, it's like nessism said it's an odd ball since he saw one.

I have never been able to help anyone here before so this moment is special to me. My 79 750L has this petcock. The brass fitting goes to the vent between carbs 3 and 4. The tube coming off the sending unit for the gauge gets routed to the same area as the float bowl drain tubes at the least some where behind the motor.

Sorry, I'm still confused. The fuel guage sending unit, under the tank, has 2 wires & one small tube coming from it. The wires should plug in to the wireing harness & the tubeshould be routed down the frame, past the airbox, then down behind the engine & hanghig down toward the ground, left open so any fuel that may leak from the sending unit will drain down this tube & out on the ground. If this tube is plugged on to your vacuum fitting on your petcock, something is really screwed. What is the vacuum line from your carb connected to?? Just my opinion

no no no rphillips you just fixed my problem. everything is now clear. basscliff said what you were saying but the screw was throwing people off. I see exactly what you are saying, I was wondering why was there a tube coming from that cover to the pet cock, now I seeeeeeeee, wooo hooo, you guys are great, yaaa hoooo. :dancing:
And yes gser425 you were right too... Thanks guys

If it's stock then I shoul be able to buy a reman kit and put new seals in it, it worked for this long and now that I know it's prolly stock i'll just keep it on their, Its worked this long, just plumbed wrong. The PO has it all buggered up with missing stuff and missing lines all over the carbs and just in general didn't put stuff back after he werked on it so I'm trying to get it back stock and am having a hek of a time and also learning alot on the way. So again thank you guys, you don't know how much I appreciate the help, yall r great...

Daa da Daaa GS Resources strikes again.

If your bike was running with the drain line hooked to the petcock, it would have been in the pri position. Not a good idea. Be sure to hook up a vacuum line to the petcock from the (I think #2 carb) & set the petcock to ON, NOT PRI. Just my opinion

Works fine on that 80 550E. The screw is for PRIME not one off. Most petcocks have 3 positions this one has two with the screw for prime. Not a big deal unless you don't ride often then you'll need a screwdriver to prime carbs to get it to start.

The small outlet is vacuum from the carbs, big one is fuel.

If it's not stock to your model it's prob cause yours came with the nasty "no reserve" L petcock. I'd stick with this one rather than go back to that.

New seals don't usually help. They're either good or you should replace. Z1 enterprises does a copy supposedly from same manufacturer that's cheaper than stock.

Dan :)

Yes, by all things stated you are correct. I just don't like the screw in fuel stop, since it's vacuum activated I guess it is ok. I'm gonna try to find a kit and rebuild it to like new. I'm painting it now and and will start trying to rebuild the carbs very soon. I'm getting all the little things worked out and putting on all the little bits that either fell off, or were left off. There was absolutely no rubber attached to the gas tank at all so I'm spending time getting all the little things replaced.

This was the color when purchased, it's going to be Gun metal gray over black. I'm gonna split the tank right thru the logo with a red pin stripe seperating the two halves. Gonna put on Daytona bars, low mirrors and redo the seat and ride. But first new tires. The rear tire is a good year tire, smokes very well when applied to the asphault in a circular non forward moving fashion.
It's been a lobor of love and an intense learning experience. I sold a nice running GS1100E to get this that needs work, I wanted to build my own, crazy yea, but it wasn't mineses.
Thank you salty_monk, that was the finishing touch.
