A buddy of mine recently bought a 1981 suzuki gs650. I'm helping him with putting the bike back in shape.I need to know what type of fluid & how much is used for the shaft drive?

I receive numerous requests from people who can no longer log in because their accounts were deleted. As mentioned in the forum FAQ, user accounts are deleted if you haven't logged in for the past 6 months. If you can't log in, then create a new forum account. If you don't get an error message, then check your email account for an activation message. If you get a message stating that the email address is already in use, then your account still exists so follow the instructions in the forum FAQ for resetting your password.Have you forgotten your password or have a new email address? Then read the forum FAQ for details on how to reset it.
Any email requests for "can't log in anymore" problems or "lost my password" problems will be deleted. Read the forum FAQ and follow the instructions there - that's what we have one for...

Returning Visitors
If you are a returning visitor who never received your confirmation email, then odds are your email provider is blockinig emails from our server. The only thing that can be done to get around this is you will have to try creating another forum account using an email address from another domain.
If you are a returning visitor to the forum and can't log in using your old forum name and password but used to be able to then chances are your account is deleted. Purges of the databases are done regularly. You will have to create a new forum account and you should be all set.

I believe on the 650 the front gears are lubed by your motor oil (not so on the bigger shafties) , as in you dont add any there i dont think. The rear drive uses Hypoid gear oil, 90w? But you cant get that anymore so 80w90 or whatever you can get at the autoparts store will work just fine.

TCK, I hate to break the news to you but you can get hypoid 90w oil, PJ1 makes it. I'm sure other brands are also available.

Right, well, Autozone DOESNT sell 90w. And 80w90 is just fine. So im not going to special order gear oil when whats available down the street for 5 bucks is just fine..

Agreed. Anything near the correct weight ("90" somewhere in the designation) and marked "GL-5" and "Hypoid" somewhere on the bottle will work just fine. Yeah, even the Wal-Mart brand. These gears are under very little stress.
And yeah, the straight 90W is available but it's not usually convenient and it's not necessary. You can also find 90W sold with the boat supplies -- it's used in the gears in some boat drives, apparently.

For the final drive gear case its recommended to use Hypoid gear oil SAE90 API Grade GL-5. I run Valvoline Hypoid gear oil 80w-90 API GL-5 with no problems. As for the front drive/transmission it uses the regular engine oil. I'd recommend the rotella15w-40 for your engine. You can get either of these at any autoparts store or even your local wallyworld.

I just picked up a quart of the 80w90 from Walmart. It says GL-5 on the bottle, but I did not see the word Hypoid.
