wheel sizes

I was just reading Gopher 711's posting about the size of wheels on his kat. He listed them as 1.85 front and 2.50 rear.
This is the same as my 79 1000 EN. Is this correct or did some PO change the wheels?

My front tire is 110/90-19 and the rear is 130/90-17. According to BikeCliff's site, my front tire is oversized and it looks like the rear is within the correct size range for the 2.50 rim albeit on the far end of limitation.

What should I be ordering as I am getting ready to replace these "old" tires? Should I drop down to a 120/90 or even 110/90 on the rear and go with the smaller 80/90 or 90/90 for the front?

Would this result in better handling with the smaller tire sizes?

The generally accepted "proper" sizes for your bike would be 100/90-19 for the front and 130/90-17 for the rear.

The 100 front tire will speed up your steering a bit, so be prepared. Actually, it will just feel like somebody turned on the power steering.

Any idea what tires you are going to order? Many of us that don't have the highest sporting aspirations have gotten the Shinko 230 Tour Master (or something similar. I am at work and can't check the details on that.). So far, it has gotten pretty good reviews, but still have not heard from anybody who has worn out a set to say how long they last. A pair of them from Motorcycle Superstore is well under $150, shipped to your door.

I put a set on my 79GS1000 last year and after 100km they still look like new! That's right, one hundred kilometers.

OK, it's only a few bucks, but it IS cheaper at MS, they had it in stock, and it was the source that was suggested.
Besides, it is particularly aggravating to have to go through the entire checkout process to find out what the shipping would cost.
Other places have a running sub-total when you look at the cart, but BB makes you get to the point of almost entering your payment.

If you have some particular reason for choosing Bike Bandit, go for it, but many of us avoid them because of higher prices and poorer service.

That bike looks GREAT for being 239 years old.

It's working better than the bike. That's why the tires only have a hundred klicks on them. Hopefully this year I'll do better.
