    A note to old forum members...
    I receive numerous requests from people who can no longer log in because their accounts were deleted. As mentioned in the forum FAQ, user accounts are deleted if you haven't logged in for the past 6 months. If you can't log in, then create a new forum account. If you don't get an error message, then check your email account for an activation message. If you get a message stating that the email address is already in use, then your account still exists so follow the instructions in the forum FAQ for resetting your password.

    Have you forgotten your password or have a new email address? Then read the forum FAQ for details on how to reset it.

  • Returning Visitors

    If you are a returning visitor who never received your confirmation email, then odds are your email provider is blockinig emails from our server. The only thing that can be done to get around this is you will have to try creating another forum account using an email address from another domain.

    If you are a returning visitor to the forum and can't log in using your old forum name and password but used to be able to then chances are your account is deleted. Purges of the databases are done regularly. You will have to create a new forum account and you should be all set.

White smoke... Fuel line and 10mm wheel spacer

Well, I finally got the Dyna S install complete, as well as new plugs and voilla! She fires... The downside is... There is a lot of white smoke coming from the left side exhaust pipe. I haven't taken the carbs off to inspect yet... and I also have no airbox/filters on just yet. Just curious, where to look first. I don't want to have to take all the carbs apart... but bike week is coming up quick and I may have no choice.

Now I have to get the tank back together so I can ditch my temporary one.

Side note.. what size is the fuel line and where can I find a 10mm spacer for the rear wheel?

i probably can't help you anyways, but neither will anyone else with out year, engine, and model

white smoke sounds like oil, but just a shot in the dark.....
 
Sorry... 77 550 Mikuni Carbs

Timing may be off.. but that wouldn't make it this rich.

Cyls 1+2 the plugs are black.. 3+4 are nice and new looking...

I can't ride the bike because I still need a 10mm spacer for the rear wheel to bolt up right. Ive heard of people using washers.. I may try that as a temp fix until I can have one of my longer spacers machined.

Note: I need the spacer because I put a 16" 450 wheel on the back which has a slightly smaller swingarm.

The Front 19" bolted right up.
 
How long did you let it run?

I can't think of any possible connection between installing an ignition system and exhaust smoke... unless one cylinder wasn't firing before, and the pipe is full of water vapor (which sounds pretty far-fetched).

BUT worth doin

run a compression check on the cylinders... may have nothing to do with your problem, but something that you should do at regular intervals anyways
 
some hardware stores carry machine bushings in metric.... worth a phone call to the local hardware store
 
Well.. After much more work and tinkering... She runs good.. still smokes, but only at first.. it gets a little better after she warms up.

The spacer was 16 mm not 10 thats what I get for measuring with a slide ruler and looking at the wrong side. I found another spacer that was longer and used the center part of an old wheel bearing to get it spot on...

The new issue I have is the 450 chain will not work with the 550 motor. Apparently it is about 2 links too short of being able to get on the sprockets. I have a 16 in the front and a 45 in the rear. That was coming from a worn out 15 on the front and a 52 on the rear. So.. I am now in the market for another chain as I don't want to use the old one that was on the 550 (It was beat).

Sounds like oil is getting past the piston rings, or possibly by the cam followers. Form my experience if it goes away when the engine warms looks at your piston rings, but there is an easy and cheap way to test this.

Do your compression test (compression tester is about $10), record your results, put a table spoon of oil in each cylinder and test the compression again, if you notice that the compression increases considerably for any cylinder (or all) than you need to look at replacing your rings or boring out your engine.
 
In my experience white smoke is water condensation. If it goes away after one minute or less don't worry about it. It's normal. If it's oil it will be a grayish blue and you WILL be able to smell it.
