All new forum registrations must be activated via email before you have full access to the forum.

A Special Note about Email accounts!
DO NOT SIGN UP USING hotmail, outlook, gmx, sbcglobal, att, bellsouth or email.com. They delete our forum signup emails.

A note to old forum members...
I receive numerous requests from people who can no longer log in because their accounts were deleted. As mentioned in the forum FAQ, user accounts are deleted if you haven't logged in for the past 6 months. If you can't log in, then create a new forum account. If you don't get an error message, then check your email account for an activation message. If you get a message stating that the email address is already in use, then your account still exists so follow the instructions in the forum FAQ for resetting your password.

Have you forgotten your password or have a new email address? Then read the forum FAQ for details on how to reset it.

Any email requests for "can't log in anymore" problems or "lost my password" problems will be deleted. Read the forum FAQ and follow the instructions there - that's what we have one for...

  • Returning Visitors

If you are a returning visitor who never received your confirmation email, then odds are your email provider is blockinig emails from our server. The only thing that can be done to get around this is you will have to try creating another forum account using an email address from another domain.

If you are a returning visitor to the forum and can't log in using your old forum name and password but used to be able to then chances are your account is deleted. Purges of the databases are done regularly. You will have to create a new forum account and you should be all set.

Won't even try to start!

I have been reading on this site and Basscliff's site on how to rebuild the carbs on my '81 gs850, anyway this bike has been sitting for a few years so I got new intake o-rings and 4 carb kits with new floats and set in rebuilding ( I have rebuilt quadrajet carbs for cars for years, this is NOTHING like those).
I cleaned and rebuilt all 4 and reinstalled them, gas is flowing from the petcock on prime, and shuts off on the other positions just fine, also flows when cranking. The carbs have gas in them by checking the drain plugs.
I have spark and compression, in fact it runs good on starting fluid, but it doesnt seem to be getting gas to the cylinders, the plugs don't even seem wet or smell like gas.
Iam wondering what to check next, my thoughts are to recheck the float levels but it would seem like it would at least fire and run badly, but nothing, only on ether. I would go on and tell you every step I had taken, but it looks like I've written a book so far :D any help would be appreciated!

Do the "carb kits" consist of OEM parts or aftermarket parts?

They're all after market parts. Not even sure the OEM needles are still available and the "kits", from what I've seen, have a needle taper that is to blunt...

I have been reading on this site and Basscliff's site on how to rebuild the carbs on my '81 gs850,

You should have done Cliff's carburetor cleaning, not just read about it and bought bogus parts you didn't need.

Just a semi-random thought, but I've seen folks with lots of car experience make this mistake before...

Are you 110% SURE the spark plug wires are on the correct places? The wires from one coil, usually the left coil, go to 1 and 4. The wires from the other coil go to 2 and 3. (Cylinder #1 is on the left.)

Sorry, but if you have been "reading on this site and Basscliff's site on how to rebuild the carbs", then went ahead and bought "carb kits", and you are using ether, I don't think there is anything else that can be suggested that would be followed.

Airbox and filter installed? But then again, you read BassCliff's site, but......
