    A note to old forum members...
    I receive numerous requests from people who can no longer log in because their accounts were deleted. As mentioned in the forum FAQ, user accounts are deleted if you haven't logged in for the past 6 months. If you can't log in, then create a new forum account. If you don't get an error message, then check your email account for an activation message. If you get a message stating that the email address is already in use, then your account still exists so follow the instructions in the forum FAQ for resetting your password.

    Have you forgotten your password or have a new email address? Then read the forum FAQ for details on how to reset it.

    Any email requests for "can't log in anymore" problems or "lost my password" problems will be deleted. Read the forum FAQ and follow the instructions there - that's what we have one for...

  • Returning Visitors

    If you are a returning visitor who never received your confirmation email, then odds are your email provider is blockinig emails from our server. The only thing that can be done to get around this is you will have to try creating another forum account using an email address from another domain.

    If you are a returning visitor to the forum and can't log in using your old forum name and password but used to be able to then chances are your account is deleted. Purges of the databases are done regularly. You will have to create a new forum account and you should be all set.

worth buying the K&N or use stock filter

my 82 gs1100gl is completly stock. it is in need of a new airfilter and i was wondering if it was worth buying the k and n filter for it or just buy the stock replacement filter. basically whats the pros and cons if any. thanks guys.
 
K&N filters pass lots of air because they don't filter very well. Most people will tell you they filter "good enough" which I think is true - I have one on my 850. Only reason I bought one was because it was cheaper than a stock filter. My plugs are white now but the bike runs well so I haven't done anything about it. In my opinion, leave the stock filter in there unless you need a new one.
 
There's also a Uni foam filter that's a direct replacement for the stock foam element. It's about $20 most places.

Don't use more than the lightest whisper of oil, or it will block off too much airflow and run like crap.
 
I've had very good results using a stock airbox with K&N OEM style filter, stock exhaust, and Dynojet Stage I jet kit on several GS and KZ models. On four different bikes (GS700ESF, GS750EX, KZ750A2, and GS1100EZ) the changes resulted in drastically reduced warm up time, crisper throttle response, and slightly increased top end "punch".

I think it's one of the best bang for your buck performance upgrades for these old UJMs.
 
When I put a K&N filter in the stock box on my '83 GS1100GLD the only tweak I had to do was with the fuel/air screws. Everything else stock and it was fine. I'd do it again in a heartbeat.

I would run a stock filter, the k&n will allow more air resulting in a lean running bike. You can run a k&n if your willing to compensate by adjusting the carbs, some times, that runs into alot of work. That my .02 cents worth
