So some of you know, that "I'm doing my own thing" when it comes to my GS.. I have been struggling with the carbs, tuning, and being more frugal with this build than maybe I should... Well, I took the carb to head boots off last week, to give them a lookie lookie... the area where the clams go looked a little misshapen... so I boiled water and plopped em in for a few minutes... pulled them out and they looked much better. I also ordered new clamps, but they hadn't arrived so i trued the old ones as they were misshapen... With the carbs off I looked closer at the carb to boot fit... I had a feeling I might not have been seating all the way, and if that was the case, the clamps weren't effectively sealing and causing the boots to loose their shape... I replaced orings, a little lube on the boots, and slide the carbs back on, tightened the clamps..this all happend last Wednesday.... I took it for a ride yesterday OMG! what a difference! not perfect, some hesitation/ bogging at 5/8-3/4 throttle but before it was at 3/8 throttle... idled much better also as expected and much smother, no popping at all. I'm slammed at work this week and cant wait to tune and re-synch the carbs to get closer. I also ordered some shims for the needle and will play with that... right now I'm middle notch and all jets are factory. :D

It will probably run that much better when you spring for the $125 or so that the new boots will cost. :D

YUUUUP!!!!!!! collecting cans to fund... I have 4 55 gallon bags full so I figure thats at least 2 boots worth... ;)

Did you specifically ask Don for his VM26 carb holders or ask for "Suzuki" carb holders??? He makes VM 26 holders that dont require the orings. He makes them like the old Kawasaki style with the raised rib that seals against the head.

I just talked to him a few days ago, and i sent Eric Bang a link to his ebay auction and Eric just bought 8 of them ( 2 full sets ) for 95.00 a set of 4 plus the shipping. And KZ 1000 boots fit..the only thing you need to do with the KZ boots is to take a burr and elongate the holes about 1 MM so the bolts will line up with a Suzuki head.

Subject: VM26

I have a 1979 Suzuki GS that has Mikuni VM26 Carbs, to you have boots to fit these? They are offset, 2 right side, 2 left side.

Regards,

Mark

I missed the "OFFSET" part...then maybe he doesnt have the offset style. My bad for the confusion...sorry.

Mark, if you haven't checked out the following, it may be of help:

www.mrcycles.com
www.partstoutlaw.com
www.partshark.com

What are the differences between the '80 carbs & '79 carbs on your 850?

Here are prices for carb boots for an '80 850G:

Item #s 25 & 26. $31.78 each (need to of each, obviously.)

http://www.mrcycles.com/oemparts/a/suz/50d4015df8700230d8b4e496/carburetor

A bit less expensive here (but not sure how shipping compares):

MR cycles does have a 'lowest price guarantee', so it won't hurt to ask....

Hope that was helpful!!

Or...
Under a hundred for all four delivered to your door from: http://jbmindustries.com/
Either your math is a little different than mine or you are seeing something that I am not. :-k

Not all of them are showing prices, but the ones that do, show it as "$74 pair".
Last time I counted, it took two "pairs" to handle four cylinders, which would be $148, plus shipping of $6.80.

From Parts Outlaw, boots for the '79 carbs are $31.24 and boots for the '80 carbs are $27.16.
Shipping is a flat-rate $9.99, so your total would be $134.95 or $118.63.

Now let's toss in the fact that JBM does not recommend vacuum tubes because "they weaken the assembly".
Makes OEM look better all the time. :-\\\

.

Thanks all for the input. the 79 carbs are VM, the 80's are CV. That aside, when I actually order said boots, I will go oem. I cant imagine how one would vac synch without that port.

As I was installing the used stock intake manifolds on my 750 project anyway, I thought that I might take some pic's and compare the NEWLY available NEW (made in the U.S.A.) JBM intake manifolds to the old stockers.
Here are the pictures.

There is no offset on either set and, unlike some other forum members, my math skills are not sadly lacking.
$96.00 DELIVERED (for FOUR of them) is still a whole lot less expensive than the stockers. ;)
And, they don't require the extra expense of the necessary new O-rings either if you REALLY want to compare the price differences.
Also notice that NEITHER set has manifold vacuum ports as these engines have them in the cylinder head. (750,850,1000)
$144.91 delivered for the stock parts with O-rings or $96.00 delivered for the JBM's. The choice is yours.

Thanks for the input. Unfortunately, my 1980 850 has offset stock boots with vac ports. My head does not have these ports. As a mechanical engineer, I would be more comfortable with an oring seal vs a full face seal of that design.
