Spoke to a local company here in Brisbane and they quoted $250 plus the postage to refurbish my old rotor.

I wouldnt bother with refurbed disc when you can buy a new one for the same price.

This metalgear stuff turns up on evilbay, I got a set for the front on mine, its good stuff equivilent in performance and looks to the OEM.

Yes I can, but it won't be until Monday arvo before I can do it as the wheel and rotor are at work.

Have you tried any local bike wreckers for your parts (or ones in Sydney even). When I had a prang last year I managed to get most of my parts at a reasonable cost from a wreckers in Western Sydney who specialised in older bikes. Can't remember what it was called but I just got on the phone and 2 calls later was put onto this place which had 75% of the parts I needed.

You need to quiz them about the actual condition of the parts if buying unseen, but prices were quite fair and shipping a lot more affordable.

It can sometimes be quicker and cheaper just to get on the phone like the old days.

I know Coady we are losing touch with the old way of speaking to people direct and now using the internet for everything. Shopping for stuff is more fun though. Have tried a wrecker up here for final drive. Alot dearer quote then what I can get it shipped from US.

John I would say you are right cause of broken final drive....wheel stands or burnouts.

The quote for refurbishment was from metalgear. The front rotors come complete bolt straight on. If you look closely to the rear rotor its missing the centre bit that is riveted in. Apparently the company needs your old rotor to reuse the centre bit and rerivet a new outer part. Hope that makes sense without pics.

Mate heaps of gaskets out there, but I keep reading on this forum to stick with the original or is that just for the head gasket??? Will have to read again. Thanks

Ged, I don't know who did what to that final drive, but they achived a feat most impossible, those things are built like Mack trucks, mine has had its fair share of burnouts and wheelies and general abuse, and it is still like new.
Hope yu come right for not too much money, I am enjoying this build.
As for the gaskets, yes OEM is always better, but more so for the base gasket than the head, you can go with a good after market head gasket, but you really want to use an OEM base gasket to avoid leaks later.

OEM for base & definitely for head. I've replaced my head gasket twice. First time with OEM and it held up great. 2nd time with something else??? and I have a minor leak.

It's not the place to save money.

Done, once I start on the engine (couple of months time), which will be a top end rebuild, I think I will get the full gasket OEM kit. I like PartShark in US and have tested the water with them and received some parts without any problems. Is $200 too expensive for full gasket kit??????????


At the moment I have the frame back from powder coaters. I asked if they could cover the compliance plate before sandblasting. No didnt happen, plate is very soft aluminium and got a bit damaged. With reading glasses on the serial number can just be read.

They did a good job and covered most threads before painting the gloss black. I only got the frame and swing arm powder coated and all the other parts I am painting my self from the can.

Do you think they are the original handlebars?

Frame looks nice and clean all PC'ed like that. I like it. And no those are not the original handlebars. They look like they might be a 'daytona' or 'euro' type that is a pretty popular swap around here.The stock bars are taller and have more pull back.

As long as youve got proof it was registered before, an illegible plate wont be a drama.

The frame looks great! Kickin' myself I didn't do enough cleaning up of the nuts and bolts while assembling though, those ones that are nice and shiny on yours make the difference.

I've a rear rotor you can have. if you decide to have Chuck send you the final drive, I can ship it to him so it can be included with the final drive.

I can get pictures/measurements upon request.

I just measured the rotor. unfortunately it measures .236 at its thinnest point. (6mm = .2362) I'd start looking for another one...
