A note to old forum members...
I receive numerous requests from people who can no longer log in because their accounts were deleted. As mentioned in the forum FAQ, user accounts are deleted if you haven't logged in for the past 6 months. If you can't log in, then create a new forum account. If you don't get an error message, then check your email account for an activation message. If you get a message stating that the email address is already in use, then your account still exists so follow the instructions in the forum FAQ for resetting your password.

Have you forgotten your password or have a new email address? Then read the forum FAQ for details on how to reset it.

Any email requests for "can't log in anymore" problems or "lost my password" problems will be deleted. Read the forum FAQ and follow the instructions there - that's what we have one for...

If you are a returning visitor who never received your confirmation email, then odds are your email provider is blockinig emails from our server. If you are a returning visitor to the forum and can't log in using your old forum name and password but used to be able to then chances are your account is deleted. Purges of the databases are done regularly. You will have to create a new forum account and you should be all set.

Delayed/ No Throttle response

Kentman7

Forum Apprentice
I have 1982 Suzuki GS300L.

It starts and idles just fine at the moment, and will idle consistently for an extended amount of time.

The RPMs will not increase when the throttle is engaged. And they other day it had sort of a delayed response. Like 2 to 3 seconds for the RPMs to react to the throttle.

Now to the weird part. Whenever I engage the Blinker, press on the brakes, or turn on the high beams, the RPMs start going up, and the throttle has not been touched!

any suggestions on what is going on?

thanks, Kent

Just curious what battery voltage is during this time and when you're applying a load... is the charging system original?

Just saying, you have 5 or more threads related to carbs not idling.
I tend to avoid those because i do not like re-reading all them threads to answer to one of them.

What he said!

IMHO, you will probably get better responses to your issue if you would delete the other threads and condense them into a new one explaining what has been done so far, and what is the current problem.

/\ ditto x3............Too much to ask anyone here that wants to try to help you to be going back and forth between the various threads you started to try and piece together what you've done.

My apologies. I deleted the excesses carb idle posts.

so far, my bike is idling great, and will idle for an extended amount of time with no issues. Carbs are freshly cleaned and rebuild, air box/air filter/boots are in great shape, valve clearance and timing is set, and gas is new and has stabilizer in it.

I recently pull carbs apart to check the pilot jet for debris, and found it clear. But as I was in there I noticed the pilot jet didn’t have a plug that I see all over the carb manuals on this forum. I then found out that the carb specs for this GS300L doesn’t have any mention of a pilot jet plug, where as other models have the plug mentioned. I thought it was strange that it doesn’t mention it in the specs, but still has housing for the plug to fit right in.

do you think the pilot mixture screw could have anything to do with the delayed/no throttle response?

i’m wondering if the pilot mixture screw is too far out, and it’s causing the overall mixture with the main jet to be to rich?

thank you all for your patience with my “newbie behaviors”.

I really appreciate this forum, it has helped me out ALOT!

also, yes, the charging system is original.

Could be.
This is a good moment to document how both screws are set : (engine off) screw them in, counting how many turns until lightly seated.
Then start experimenting with running engine and see how the engine reacts.
A Colortune would be nice, so you can see how the engine is really doing.

I recommend reading chapter 4 of the manual (https://gsarchive.bwringer.com/mtsac/~cliff/storage/gs/GS250T-300LZ_manual-82.pdf)
This will show how to set up and balance the carbs properly.

Maybe all that is happening is the carbs are out of balance.

A proper cleaning, setup and sync is more important than many think ...
Check out the "Top 10 Newbie Mistakes" (see link in my sig) : doing proper maintenance is crucial.
Attacking an individual problem may work, but usually there's several factors in play.

Did you replace the o-rings on the carb-to-cylinder boots ?
Those often leak, any carb adjustment is useless if they do.

Also, check out the troubleshooting page 48.

Several things mentioned you can check.
That brings us from fuel to electronics.
The igniters on these bikes are prone to failure, could be because of a bad battery, corroded wiring loom,
failing charging system, etc.
You may be in for a lot of work on the electronics.

Is the battery good, have you measured if it is charging properly ?

If not sure, check out The Stator Papers.
https://www.thegsresources.com/statorpapers.php

no. 3 Quick test, and 4 Fault Finding Chart are quite good.

Anybody here know the proper adjustment for the pilot mixture screw on a 1982 GS300L?

I am so close to getting this thing running again. It idles great, and I’m even able to throttle up and down a little when the engine is warming up. After the engine is warm, it stops throttling.

carb to cylinder o-rings look fine, but don’t you think it would have a hard time idling if there were a air leak somewhere?
