    A note to old forum members...
    I receive numerous requests from people who can no longer log in because their accounts were deleted. As mentioned in the forum FAQ, user accounts are deleted if you haven't logged in for the past 6 months. If you can't log in, then create a new forum account. If you don't get an error message, then check your email account for an activation message. If you get a message stating that the email address is already in use, then your account still exists so follow the instructions in the forum FAQ for resetting your password.

    Have you forgotten your password or have a new email address? Then read the forum FAQ for details on how to reset it.

    Any email requests for "can't log in anymore" problems or "lost my password" problems will be deleted. Read the forum FAQ and follow the instructions there - that's what we have one for...

  • Returning Visitors

    If you are a returning visitor who never received your confirmation email, then odds are your email provider is blockinig emails from our server. The only thing that can be done to get around this is you will have to try creating another forum account using an email address from another domain.

    If you are a returning visitor to the forum and can't log in using your old forum name and password but used to be able to then chances are your account is deleted. Purges of the databases are done regularly. You will have to create a new forum account and you should be all set.

  • In order to help others find info on a particular bike, be sure to put the year, make or model of bike that you are asking a question about, in the Topic Title. This will allow people to pass by posts they have no interest in.

1974 Laverda 3C

Tom, thought I just saw your Laverda in a TV commercial?? Just saw the ad for Progressive insurance titled More Than a Bike and saw one that sure resembled yours, then noticed it didn't have front disc

The ones built in 72/3 were drum front brake. Haven't seen the ad tho.

I will do a video after I install the new ignition. It's running well, but the ignition is said to be the biggest single improvement to these bikes. The advance curve is really basic, and at this point it's just not very responsive or torquey off idle without a fistful of throttle to get the revs up to 3K for a launch. Probably mid to late June. Too busy!
 
I've invested big $ in an ignition upgrade that uses the original pickups, and hope to install it next week, along with new coils. It was costly, but it is said to transform the bike's low-end response, which is quite sluggish up to 3K RPM. The original Bosch ignition has two advance settings, one biased toward startup, sub 3K, then one for the rest of the rev range. It was unreliable, with water ingress killing them off in droves, especially in wet old Blighty.

People on the Laverda forum are surprised that I have a working original. The charging system is also a weak point. I got an SH775 from Ed (Thanks, Ed!) and thought it had zero charging due to a bad charging coil, but on spirited rides, it turns out it does charge. The problem is that it starts charging at around 3K RPM. I ride with the light off for now, as it only uses the battery for lighting, not ignition. The bike only had a rectifier, no regulator. The new system has 16 preset curves, idle stabilization, and a 200W charge coil plus a separate ignition AC coil. Here's hoping.

Classic bike values (Norton and Laverda, I'm looking at you) aren't so great, but the bike's worth it to me. My blue GS1100E is a better bike in many ways, but I always liked Italian stuff, so it's a labor of love.

Went for a ride on the 3C today and stopped in at the local HD place for a burger. Saw this next to my bike on the way out. There's a show nearby, called 'Born Free', and this must've been there. Had to fight through the crowd taking pictures of my Laverda to get a shot of it....:ROFLMAO:

To each his own. That thing is not in your Laverdas league.

I was thinking, how could anyone make that monstrosity even worse? Say it with me, "Shaft drive!"
 
Rob, could you ever imagine why cars quit using chains & started using shafts back in the 30's?... A hint... THEY WORKED BETTER
 
Exotic Italians are in a class by themselves. I wouldn't mind pushing that MV a few miles...up hill! 😎
 
A fair number of Moto Guzzis on my list of desired bikes, all shaft-driven. The BMW R1100R I am wrenching on currently is a really sweet ride.
 
Working on the ignition. Got the stator rotor off with a borrowed puller, no issues there. The crank seal is doing its job. I mounted the ECU in the toolbox. Still some room in the battery compartment, it's huge. My replacement battery (18AH, 320CCA) is large, but nothing like the original. The SH775 takes up a lot of space, so I had to drill the four mount holes on an angled surface. New coils will be mounted in the space where the original Bosch ECU and coils resided, up by the steering neck. I will likely need to make a mounting plate out of sheet aluminum. Hope to have it all done next week.
