If you don't get an error message, then check your email account for an activation message. If you get a message stating that the email address is already in use, then your account still exists so follow the instructions in the forum FAQ for resetting your password.

Have you forgotten your password or have a new email address? Then read the forum FAQ for details on how to reset it.

Any email requests for "can't log in anymore" problems or "lost my password" problems will be deleted. Read the forum FAQ and follow the instructions there - that's what we have one for...

GS750 8V shim/washer found in sump... identify?

matt7

Forum Newbie
Greetings, assistance needed please - as per title, on removing sump (to remove engine unknown from frame) I have found what appears to be a circular shim - not mashed up thankfully! It has witness marks showing rotational movement.
o/d - 24.85mm ~ .978 inch
i/d - 13.40mm ~ .527 inch
thickness 0.85mm ~ .033 inch
It's a chain drive 750 8v with 850 top end, there's lots of debris in the sump - non metalic and I'm guessing from camchain guides - I'm not able to strip motor at present time (planned for early new year) but would like to know if anyone can identify the shim / washer please.
Motor isn't seized and as said. the shim/washer hasn't been mashed up passing through the engine - going by the amount of orange rtv sealant the previous "builder" wasn't greatly skilled in the art and I'm optimistic shim was "lost" on assembly and lay forgotten ?...
Cheers
Matt

You're going to have to take the Valve Cover off to inspect if you're missing a shim on top of one of the buckets. But I have to believe that the bike wouldn't run (at best), or be incredibly noisy/bent valves(at worst). Likely, the previous "builder" dropped a shim down the tunnel.

Thanks for reply, it's not a valve shim, realise it needs to be stripped to find where it's missing from - looks like a shim from a Yamahaha kickstart idler gear ?...

I've not run the engine - turned over on jump pack okay

The word shim almost got me confused. After reading description it seems to be just a regular old washer. No clue where it may have came from, but thinking there's probably not many washers, nor shims, in that eng. that are that big.

Could it possibly be a starter idler gear washer?
Probably that. I took one apart to find none present. It had been running like that for a long time, luckily no damage.
That was a useful tip to me - to make sure the idle gear washer is accounted for when taking them off any time after that.
