    A note to new registrants...
All new forum registrations must be activated via email before you have full access to the forum.

A Special Note about Email accounts!
DO NOT SIGN UP USING hotmail, outlook, gmx, sbcglobal, att, bellsouth or email.com. They delete our forum signup emails.

A note to old forum members...
I receive numerous requests from people who can no longer log in because their accounts were deleted. As mentioned in the forum FAQ, user accounts are deleted if you haven't logged in for the past 6 months. If you can't log in, then create a new forum account. If you don't get an error message, then check your email account for an activation message. If you get a message stating that the email address is already in use, then your account still exists so follow the instructions in the forum FAQ for resetting your password.

Have you forgotten your password or have a new email address? Then read the forum FAQ for details on how to reset it.

Any email requests for "can't log in anymore" problems or "lost my password" problems will be deleted. Read the forum FAQ and follow the instructions there - that's what we have one for...

  • Returning Visitors

If you are a returning visitor who never received your confirmation email, then odds are your email provider is blockinig emails from our server. The only thing that can be done to get around this is you will have to try creating another forum account using an email address from another domain.

If you are a returning visitor to the forum and can't log in using your old forum name and password but used to be able to then chances are your account is deleted. Purges of the databases are done regularly. You will have to create a new forum account and you should be all set.

Woohooooooo! After a MASSIVE order and a MASSIVE asspain of a project, my MASSIVE reward has arrived... 296090966250101657 Good through April 11, 2025 Seriously, if anyone asks you about doing a water pump and tensioner kit on a Toyota Sienna, you tell 'em to lose your number. You don't know...

    GS850GL engine year identification

The later (82+) clutch cover is angled. (if you're looking down at it from the top), and the earlier one is flat. I've run across mongrels in the wild; Suzuki's motto is "waste not want not", so you have to pay close attention to the engine in front of you. Speaking of the clutch cover, beware...

    Springtime Farmington Ride - May 15 - 18, 2025

Innnnnnteresting, very very innnnnteresting. I will very likely have a conflict with that filthy 4-letter word (you know, w--k) but I will put this on my May radar for serious consideration.

    Fairing?

Unless you're four feet tall, you never look through the windshield on that Emgo fairing. It could be made of solid opaque plastic.

    Fairing?

Yup, they're still easily available new in black; paint to taste. https://www.revzilla.com/motorcycle/emgo-universal-viper-retro-cafe-fairing?sku_id=960622&gQT=1 IIRC, the dippy EMGO logo is just a sticker. I assume it's easily removable.

Still got that pink scooter? Now THAT would show galactic levels of confidence and cool.

    2025 Brown County GS Rally - June 19 - 22

I don't think we're organized enough to carefully calibrate levels of coolness like that. Looks like you'll have to show up and take your chances.

    Carb-airbox boots won't stay on?

I believe most, if not all, GS models used metal spring collars like that. They're a pain to deal with, but it's do-able. You have to compress and pry the collars in a little bit so you can push them past the indentation inside the boot and pull them out. And you have to compress them to get...

    1982 GS450 knockoff Dyna ignition.

Nice! Glad you figured this out -- it's always been a problem with these bikes. The stock ignition has failed or will fail on most of these, and there's no bolt on aftermarket option.

Changing your own tires, is it worth it anymore?

Yep, CRC2 is still around and, well, about the same as ever. I've actually had tires changed at Cycle Recycle II before, but I've done it myself for many years. I dunno, I like to make sure the tire is treated right, the rim is cleaned up to my satisfaction, new valve stems are used, the rim...

    Fork Seal Snap Ring

I've only ever seen the wire clips in Suzuki forks, but then again I haven't seen everything and I haven't worked on a GS650G. It would appear that the spring steel snap ring, PN 51156-45440, was orginal, but is NLA, so the substituted part is a wire clip, PN 51156-01A00. I don't think...

    Timing chain replacement without teardown

These are parts for the 1100E/1150E. However, the cam chain itself is the same as the 850G/GL. The front tensioner blade is the same on these two models, and is still available from Suzuki. The rear guide is not available, and the 1100/1150 rear guide is different than the 850, so this...

    Valve Shim Quality

The aftermarket shims are fine. I've used many over the years. I think they're pretty much all K&L, but maybe someone else out there is making them. One difference with OEM is that the aftermarket shims seem to have sharper edges, and they're a sort of matte finish, not shiny. OEM shim edges...

    Performance parts for gs850g.

Those are extremely healthy numbers. No way I'd take that apart. According to my Haynes manual: Stock compression ratio is 8.8:1 Compression range is 128-171 psi, service limit is 100psi, and maximum difference is 28psi. The question of high-performance 850 comes up here fairly regularly, and...
