  • Returning Visitors

    If you are a returning visitor who never received your confirmation email, then odds are your email provider is blockinig emails from our server. I have been away for quite a while and I finally got home. I found this bike on CL the first day it was listed and mad a deal on it on the spot. So now I am the proud owner of a 1971 BMW R75/5. This bike looks to be a nice complete barn find. It has been sitting for the last 20 years but is in such good shape I think it will just get a re-conditioning of all the rubber parts and back on the road it goes. I do have the headlight lense and I will probably get rid of the seat back and the funky fairing. I think it is a 60's era Avon. Not my taste but I would bet it would look great on a Triumph or Norton.

I like it a lot. And the front drum brake? Shouts, "Classic motorcycle!"

If I were king, it would be free to register. You're doing the world a favor by putting it on the road.

Please keep us updated with plenty of pics.
 
I certainly will take a bunch of pictures. First thing thats going to happen is the rear end is coming of and I will be replacing the rear main seal and lubing the drive splines. The bike has 33000 miles on it. The thing I like the best is the spedo and tach are in the headlight bucket but the tach needle is broken. So off to a guy on the ADV forum to get rebuilt. Of course the tires are crap but I am hoping the spokes are all good and tensioned properly. The guy who i got it from cleaned the dust off the tank and polished it up so I think it will stay as is. It polished up very nicely.
 
Nice find! There was a nice white 1972 in town last year for sale. I was tempted.

walnecks restore an r 90 s.They dynoed it at only 47 hp.I was surprised, I thought much more than that and your 750 I wonder.And people have toured on them for years.

One of my first cars had 69 hp, and it weighed about 2300 lbs.
 
It's all about gearing. Back in the late 60's. Bridgestone raced a 50 cc bike that went over 100 and revved out at 16000 rpm. I know this is not a performance bike but it really doesn't take much hp to overcome the friction of the engine and wheels once your up to speed. I just won't get there in 3 sec. Heck, modern 103 cu in harleys aren't making more than that with fuel injection .

So true.I once owned a 900 pound ultra.62 hp.I also owned a 64 vw.40 hp.
 
Should have put a vw bus engine in it and got er up to 50hp. I had a friend in highschool who did that and his bug flew. Had great a/c as well with all the holes in the floor boards.

It requires 30hp to push an unfaired bike along at 100mph. 47 is plenty.

I think a BMW slowly grows on you as you age. when I was in my early 20's I wouldn't consider riding anything but a Japanese bike. Now though The BMW thought keeps popping in my head. I would get a project airhead like that firstly... 250K mile bikes right there. I considered a K bike when I was in the market for the B-king... Too young I thought and went with the Zuk.

I refreshed a K100 last year. Its really a great bike but a little buzzy at high way speeds. If you are looking for a K I would recommend the K75. I hear they are as vibration free as our Suzuki's. Really the only reason I got this ike was the price was right and I needed a parts bike. I wasnt planning on spending 1100 bucks to get it back on the road but I did and it is. Glad I did spend the cash now, there are a bunch of little rubber parts that are critical and have to be replaced or you will have problems. Once they are sorted they go for a long time with just oil changes. Worst thing I can think of with this bike is every 20,000 miles you have to pull the trany off and lube the splines. It even uses Yamaha/Kawasaki shims.

If you really want one plan on spending a bunch of cash on parts. I think HD and BMW are in a competition for most expensive parts but you can still get OEM parts for bikes made in the 20's.
Thanks for all the kind words gentlemen. I have found out that the fairing in the back ground is a Avioner Gustafsson or something like that. Its for sale so come and get it. Ill have better pictures of it if anyone is interested.

I have a whole other 85 K100RS if anyone is interested. I have all the parts just have been more interested in working on other projects since I got the last one done. It could be yours if..... the price is right......

Yeah I hear the shafts are a nightmare if you don't lubricate them periodically. Also hear they use a dry clutch system and that's another nightmare when the rear main seal decides to walk out...

No BMW this season... Maybe next??? I'm sure the percentage of likely hood to ownership will increase with my age.
 
Actually I replaced the rear main seal when I had the trany off. It wasn't that bad and there is a good video on youtube that hows how to get it done. Hardest part was re-aligning it when you put it back on. I did find out the cylinder studs from a skidoo snowmobile worked great. The dry clutch has been used for a looooooong time on MW's. It is very easy deal with, actually it's easier than the wet clutches on jap bikes just dirtier because of the dust generated.
I saw you just got a B-King so it sounds like your set for quite a while. Nice bikes those are.
