Does anyone have a rusted out 1000S tank, or some beat side covers. I was entertaining the thought of making a fiberglass mold to make some replicas. It almost doesn't matter how beat they are, within reason. Rusted all to hell is just fine.

Fiberglass, carbon fiber or possibly..... I have a whole roll of the fiberglass/kevlar that was used extensively in the Voyager that flew around the world. It is a little known blend, and was custom ordered, this was laftovers from the Voyager build. It was used everywhere where they didnt use carbon fiber. I got it and used it in my airplane build on the wings, and I only used a few yards. Anyway there is a wide variety of materials that could be used, basically think of it as fiberglass. Steel replicas could be made, but the cost is to high, unless it was a large production run. By large I mean 200+ and I dont think there is a big demand, but there are a few that would like a replica, including myself.

I have an extra S tank. A bit rusty too. PM me and let's talk.
BTW: aren't S tanks same as E tanks as far as construction design?

The S side covers are identical to the regular chain drive 1000 side covers other than they don't have badge holes. Pretty easy to find and not a whole lot of money.

I was told they were different, but I don't know for sure, if they are the same this would likely be a dead end project. I see you are in Austin, I am just north of DFW, let me do some research on this and I will chime back in.

Are you 100% sure about that, thanks for the input by the way.

Not sure they actually still have these, but the Suzuki fiche shows it is available.

GS1000S 1979

QUANTITY REF# PART #REQ RETAIL YOUR PRICE

1 TANK,FUEL
44110-49031-13L (replaces 44100-49060-68U) 1 $441.16 $397.04

All the chain drive GS1000 tanks (other than the L model) have the same exterior shape and attachment points.

1978 1000C/E- Skunk stripe indentation w/44mm petcock spacing

1979 1000N/E- No Skunk indentation, same 44mm petcock spacing

1979 1000S - No Skunk indentation, 44mm petcock, NO emblem badge bars.

1980 1000E - Same shape as other years, 50mm petcock spacing

1980 1000S - Same shape, 50 mm petcock, NO emblem badge bars

BTW, some dealers show the tank as available for order, but Suzuki does not stock these parts anymore (unless they have a new batch that arrived recently - which I doubt).

And yes, I'm positive the GS1000S and GS1000C/N/E side covers are the same other than the emblem holes.

BTW, the 1000S tail section is the same as the '79 - '80 chain drive tail. The only tail that is different is the '78 Skunk part which has the indentation like the fuel tank.

Ed, Several years ago I bought the replacement tank for the '78 Skunk that my brother now has. It turned out to be a silver painted tank that appeared to be the 1980 style, ie longer flange pattern (50mm) on the petcock with no indent. It has a different number than the one listed for an S. There is a large difference in price for these two tanks on the fiche. Wonder if it is still available and maybe is painted blue/white? That would be a great deal for someone needing a new S tank. Though I don't need to replace mine, I may have to inquire just for the heck of it. Ray

Thanks, for now, no fiberglass tanks.

Hi Ray,

Suzuki superceeded the part number for all these tanks and was supplying the 1980 1000S tank (straight silver) instead up to a couple of years ago. You could get one for something like $220 back then. We should have stocked up.

I bought one of these in 2002.Believe I paid around 400 bucks at a Suzuki dealer.Still have it,only ended up using it for one ride.(long story about that)

Not a chance, I'm not that smart. Ray

Then I found out I needed a new petcock because it takes the "dreaded 80 petcock":) Oh well, this was before EBay became the place it now is for old bike parts.
