1978 GS1000 ignition timing question

Ok got it running after doing shims etc, fitted new point and condensors, set up timing statically., however it seems to lack power and runs a bit ragged until it over 2000 revs, it only runs on 2 cylinders for a minute or two but a few revs and it seems to kick in on all 4 cyls..

I then tried the timing with a strobe light and can get cyls 2 and 3 to line up correctly with the timing marks but not 1 and 4, no matter how much i move the back plate in either direction 2 and 4 just won't line up, advance weights etc are free and not stuck or anything.

I'm wondering if i got the points cam on 180 degrees it would still run? I tried swapping it around 180 degrees but it wouldn't start...Not sure if it would/should?

Any advice appreciated?

Thanks
Mick

Line up 1 and 4 first, by using the main plate, then adjust 2 and 3 by using the smaller sub-plate.

.

Check to see if the points are sparking
Best observed in the dark
Your issues may be bad condensors

Cheers guys, tried both ways but there isn't enough adjustment in the plate holes, static it seems fine but as soon as I start it and try to use the strobe it's nowhere near on the 1 and 4 cyls.. it runs out of adjustment well before it lines up

I'm thinking maybe the spring on the 1 and 4 weight is maybe a bit weak but not sure if that would make a difference? I'll investigate further..

Also, if I put it together 180 degrees out re the points cam and the advance weights thing, would it still run, or no chance?

i have a dyna ignition, but I think that uses the original advance weights? So no point chucking that on there yet..

Cheers
Mick

Did you match The Dyna to the original ignition type. It is stamped on the mechanical advance somewhere near a spring post. It will be marked ND most common #6 rotor or KD #5 rotor. If you have the wrong rotor that would make a big difference.

I don't think he has tried installing the Dyna yet.

To GS1000OZ, I wish I could help you with this problem but it has been so long ago that I had a similar problem and now I can't recall what I did to get everything lined up.

Cheers Guys, I'm still trying to get 1 and 4 lined up but I run out of adjustment so it's still off, either statically or with the strobe, I did have an intermittent spark from the 1 and 4 leads and have removed the coil and tested it with a MM, it seems to read exactly the same as the other coil so I'm assuming it's all good?

I was thinking the coil was somehow to blame, but that wouldn't explain why the static timing is also way off.. It's very strange.

I'll maybe drop on the Dyna this weekend and see if it changes anything...

If I can find the old point and condensers I'll maybe try those first and see if it changes anything, when I bought new ones I made sure they were the same type as the old ones, they fitted perfectly so I'm assuming they are correct.

Thanks
Mick.
