A Special Note about Email accounts!
DO NOT SIGN UP USING hotmail, outlook, gmx, sbcglobal, att, bellsouth or email.com. They delete our forum signup emails.

A note to old forum members...
I receive numerous requests from people who can no longer log in because their accounts were deleted. As mentioned in the forum FAQ, user accounts are deleted if you haven't logged in for the past 6 months. If you can't log in, then create a new forum account. If you don't get an error message, then check your email account for an activation message. If you get a message stating that the email address is already in use, then your account still exists so follow the instructions in the forum FAQ for resetting your password.

Have you forgotten your password or have a new email address? Then read the forum FAQ for details on how to reset it.

Any email requests for "can't log in anymore" problems or "lost my password" problems will be deleted. Read the forum FAQ and follow the instructions there - that's what we have one for...

  • Returning Visitors

If you are a returning visitor who never received your confirmation email, then odds are your email provider is blockinig emails from our server. The only thing that can be done to get around this is you will have to try creating another forum account using an email address from another domain.

If you are a returning visitor to the forum and can't log in using your old forum name and password but used to be able to then chances are your account is deleted. Purges of the databases are done regularly. You will have to create a new forum account and you should be all set.

Any way to install some kind of electronic componant instead of the ignition points system , to convert to electronic instead of always have to adjust points and re-time the whole thing ?

what about the c5 performance ignitions someone posted a couple weeks back? I know if my diy ignitor gives up, I might pony up the bennies for a c5 setup. while you would have to use c5's coils and wires along with the signal generator, at least the price also includes the coils and wires. you can use dyna systems with the factory coils, but I've heard that the coils can screw up the dyna, and vice versa. so just something to consider

Hope you don't mind my following this thread, I might also do this conversion to my 79 1000. Keep me posted.

Me too. I have a Piranha kit on a post points bike. How long since they went bust ? Newtronic I think bought the assets, think they went bust as well. Some outfit still running with it. Must be good kit to be still available and iirc half the price of the C5 gear or less.
Great engineers , crap managers.

Keep an eye out for Piranha ignitor boxes and triggers from Kwacks, etc, as they used the same bits, just different fittings for the points plate. I came across someone who was collecting and repairing old Piranhas, but lost track of him.
They are bloody good and bullet proof - the 79 points set was replaced with a Pirhana by the PO, and it was robbed from that bike and put on the '80 when the '80's ignitor broke, at least 15 years ago. Still working fine, but the thin wires from the pickups need connector attention from time to time.

Thanks for the tip.

There's nothing wrong with using the Dyna ignition with stock coils, it works fine. You can even dig out the stock coil wires and put in some new ones, there's multiple threads on the upgrade. That and new plug caps along with your Dyna ignition and you should be good to go for another 30yrs. Of course you can always get the Dyna Green coils but you don't have to. Excellent upgrade from points all my bikes get them.
