Hey yall, my name is jake. i just got a 1980 GS750L in a trade and well... broke a spark plug in the head but got a hell of a deal on CL for a headunit i had layin around haha! either way the motor i traded for is in a LOT better condition than the one that came with the bike. my plans for the bike is to chop the rear off bobber style put in a single seat, put some racing/ crotch rocket style bars in with shorter brake/clutch levers. putting GSXR or similar wheels and tires on, custom airbrushed tank with orange frame and everything else black. i have a few questions seeing as i am new to the bike scene and dont know much about them (i work on cars not bikes lol). I want to ditch the dual shock rear and put in a single shock rear and swing arm GSXR style. is there any direct swaps for this? also what all suggestions do yall have for me? thanks in advanced guys im super excited for this project!

sounds like a sweet project. will be watching the progress. lots of info here for the GS's I just joined and have learned a ton about these bikes. I too worked on cars lots but not much for the bikes till now.

ur link didnt work :(
No way! My links always work!

This is what I was talking about. saltcitytattoo's bike. The build thread is somewhere on here... Should I look for it? It has a monoshock rear end, GSXR wheels/front end, and a bobber!

new motor we put in about an hour ago. we have a runnner now guys she fires!

ok so heres an update. i got the tank put back on and the petcock didnt have a spring in it so i bypassed it with a gasket and took out the diaphragm. now i can get her to start with starting fluid and the carbs are getting fuel. the bowls are filling up. but for some reason she wont tay running. any ideas??? thanks guys!

If that reaR tailight lens is in good shape, I would be interested in taking it off your hands when you get to that stage of your build.

Personally, I think shortening the frame where the filler panels between the sidecovers and tailpiece, and moving the stock tail forward with a single seat would look sweet!

k so i got the floats unstuck and cleaned her up real good. she idles decent :/ and when i ride it up and down the street is cuts out and bogs down after about 1/3 throttle. right now there is no airbox on it and the choke is not functional. the exhaust is just manifold and pipe no muffler cuz the original one rusted and fell out lol. i plan on putting a muffler on it just dont know what yet. Any suggestions on the carb issue? and possible CHEAP exhaust suggestions? mainly worried about the carbs tho

Hold on... There is no airbox on the bike and no muffler??? I'm surprised it actually runs. Please DO NOT run the bike anymore until you get airbox or pod filters on your carbs. If you get pod filters, rejet the carbs. A cheap solution for your mufflers would be to go to your Harley dealer and ask them if they have any mufflers (they will ;)). They will sell them for cheap or give them to you for free.

It is running SUUUUUPER lean the way it is now. Keep running it without doing the above WILL burn your valves and other damages may happen. This is also why your bike is bogging.

can someone post a pic of how the airbox is supposed to be hooked up? mine diesn have a filter or anything inside it and i would assume that it should lol.

ok so im gonne chop the manifold and run a 12 inch automotive glasspack off it and get some pod filters. would the glass pack sound good? and im gonna get the carbs rejetted. i found a stage 3 on ebay for $105 shipped. idk what i will need. i havnt ordered anything yet cuz id what to get. and i think im gonna have a shop completely rebuild/clean my carbs and install my jet kit and sync em all up. i already have a 4 into 1 header what exhaust would sound good. and once i jet it can i change up exhaust how ever i want since it will be jetted?

Dude. Don't let a shop touch your carbs. They really aren't that complicated to rebuild and a shop will easily take more than the bike is worth and still not set them up perfectly.

Check out the rebuild tutorials on Basscliff's website. Do your research. Everything you could ever want to know about GS's is here but sometimes you gotta do a little bit of digging.

ok well i am ordering a stage 3 jet kit on ebay for $105 shipped :) installing it myself and cleaning up the carbs while im in there and the cycle shop by my work said they would sync up my carbs and tune em for around $40 so im pretty excited. and i am ordering a universal "shorty" muffler on ebay as well. so thats the update so far. i figured out a paint scheme for my bike too. green powder coated wheels, black tank and frame (already black from factory) and a monster logo on the top of the tank with green LED's under the tank :) gonna be sick!

Why shorten the swingarm?? People go to great lengths to..well lengthen them.
