    A note to old forum members...
    I receive numerous requests from people who can no longer log in because their accounts were deleted. As mentioned in the forum FAQ, user accounts are deleted if you haven't logged in for the past 6 months. If you can't log in, then create a new forum account. If you don't get an error message, then check your email account for an activation message. If you get a message stating that the email address is already in use, then your account still exists so follow the instructions in the forum FAQ for resetting your password.

  • Returning Visitors

    If you are a returning visitor who never received your confirmation email, then odds are your email provider is blockinig emails from our server. The only thing that can be done to get around this is you will have to try creating another forum account using an email address from another domain.

    If you are a returning visitor to the forum and can't log in using your old forum name and password but used to be able to then chances are your account is deleted. Purges of the databases are done regularly. You will have to create a new forum account and you should be all set.

I pulled off the carbs and checked all the boots for proper seal and did the same when I put the airbox back on to be assured that there was no air leak.
I also checked that I had proper flow in the choke circuit.
Thtottle snaps right back now.

I am not 100% sure, but I do not think I had the airbox boots to carb on good enough on the first install.
It was rather difficult to get on and I used an old broom stick and wedged it between the box and the frame to be able to push the box closer to the carbs.

Thanks for the information. I thought everything was good on mine but since I have the carbs off now I will definitely be sure to double check everything on the install.
I also replace a weak return spring with one that is substantially stronger. Hope I don't regret doing that.
 
Well I am back! Smoking never ceased and it was finally decided that valve seals were needed. So.........here we go! New valve seals, lap valves, hone, rings, head and base gasket. When I pulled the head off oil was sitting on top of the pistons....valve seals completely gone.

Nice work area Derek. I see you still have the dual pipes...on the concrete! Put a sheet or something underneath them! (I'm being fussy and just messin' with you) I'm sure the heads are being pampered too. ;)

Thanks Ed...built the shelves this summer to try to get some more work space. My sister gave me a sweet wood stove that will be my next garage modification. In the meantime big buddy heater and space heater work fine.
I was thinking I should put something under the pipes too...lol.

The valve seals should be pretty simple. Picked up nice c-clamp yesterday and will start tearing into the head this week.
The bad news is that the jugs are toast in terms of using stock pistons, etc. Two of the bores are in bad shape...and one is really bad. It looks like moisture helped the rings make a nice smile and ate away some iron. I ran a hone in it and there is no way to save it within the service limit of 72.08mm. I am not ready to fork out the cash for over-sized pistons, etc....but not end of the world. Because I just picked up a low mileage replacement with pistons at a really good deal, just need to wait for them to arrive.
 
Valves are lapped and new stem seal installed. Next steps are to clean up the head a bit for paint and move on to honing jugs.

Well, until I get this beast back together and running you still are the only one here...lol.
I have been moving slow unfortunately. Just last week I finally honed the jugs. Hoping I can fit the rings this week, clean and prep for paint and start reassembly.

She lives again!! Started her up on the remote tank last night and she fired right up. Need to double check all my boot clamps as the idle is creeping/dropping a tad. However I only benched synched the carbs...will do a vacuum synch and that combined with the manipulation of carb boot clamps should do the trick. I plan on taking first spin on Saturday. So nice not to have an engine that burns oil!!!

Going over my job before I sync carbs. I am struggling with my cam install and questioning myself. The notches and arrows line up where they are are supposed to be. Cams 20 pins apart. But the T mark is not exactly perfect lined up....is this ok? Should I redo....???
 
Or maybe I'm just making up situations in my mind I pulled the valve cover off pull the plugs and looked at it ....looks fine
 
Back on the road! 30 mile ride around a local lake....great windy roads. All went well. I did lose the nut off the cam chain tensioner, but I had a back-up! :)
The paint bubbled pretty bad on one side of my head, but I can fix. At least I can ride this beast with nice new rings and valve stem seals. No smoke is nice!!!!
Cannot believe the power this bike has. My neighbor rode his bike too and I found myself stopping and waiting on him to catch up quite a few times. It was a great time.

I've clocked 95 miles so far....seating the rings. Man I love this bike!!
