    I receive numerous requests from people who can no longer log in because their accounts were deleted.   • Returning Visitors

    If you are a returning visitor who never received your confirmation email, then odds are your email provider is blockinig emails from our server. The only thing that can be done to get around this is you will have to try creating another forum account using an email address from another domain.

    If you are a returning visitor to the forum and can't log in using your old forum name and password but used to be able to then chances are your account is deleted. Purges of the databases are done regularly. You will have to create a new forum account and you should be all set.

I am trying....

The only thing is it won't be painted properly/professionally this season, I will have to wait on that, kinda short on funds,,,,,but I will make look as good as possible with the way I will do it to get by for this season....

Engine Cleaning 2

So tonight I was getting the engine prepped for painting, seems we are going to get some warmer weather for a few days, so I might as well get started...

Used some chemicals to strip away any wax, grease, etc, then sprayed her down with brake cleaner, dried it all off, and put the heater on and left her for the night...

She should be nice and dry and ready for tomorrow night....

my only concern is do I just leave it on the stand that it's on now and paint what I can, once done flip over and paint the parts it's sitting on ? or can I use the points you see the straps attached to and hoist the engine into the air via the straps and the rafters in my garage, and then I can paint the whole engine at once, let her hang to dry, and put her back on the stand once she is dry and cured....

I don't know if the points I have the straps in are a good way to hold the whole engine, I don't want it to fall, or break or anything near that....

any thoughts ?

I dunno..I'd be freaked to hang it..if it slips, you know our instincts would be to throw ourselves under it to protect it from hitting the ground..:p

I think I would paint one side at a time. Let it dry, flop it over and do the other side. Cool project btw..
 
Thanks for the compliment and the advise....

I can get at 95% of it as it sits, and I figured that would be enough and once flipped that little bit could be done no problem, I will mask off what has been done so as not to get over spray on the parts already done...

I had reservations of hanging it, just wanted someone else to tell me the same....

Going to paint over the valve cover also? Gold is kind of a trademark of the early FZ..
 
Personally I'd hang it from the rafters. Place a 2"x4" (50mmX100mm) on either side of where your going to hang it from to support the rafter and connect your straps to the engine supports.

For now, yes it will be all black....I know the gold is the difacto for the covers, and I will probably do them latter, I have to do a valve job soon, and the clutch side gasket needs replacing....

But I just might paint the lettering in gold instead, just to give it a bit of....bling...on an all black theme....:D

my rafters are solid, and I was going to brace them, long board from the floor to the rafter one on either side of where my straps would be, but I am just afraid if it falls or lets go, I am going to be screwed....

I will give it some more thought...

The way the engine is right now, it's sitting on a part that is at the rear and and really is not seen, so it could be done after all the rest has been painted, it should not hopefully make a noticeable difference....if done in two stages.

I think you are overthinking it my friend. I have painted 3 the way you are planning it. To make it a bit easier on my aching back I had Mr. Muscles (weight lifting son) lift it up on to my portable workmate bench. Sprayed as much as I could get to then flipped it over to get the other side. No biggy at all.

Hanging it from the rafters is a lot more work and mental stress I think.

Go home at lunch and shoot some on. Then after supper flip it over and do the otherside. All done. On second thoughts, maybe you want to replace the gasket before you paint?

Pulled a few engines that way. As long as the straps are sturdy or it's hung by a chain, she'll be fine. What does the engine weigh? 90 Kg? if in doubt make a wooden stand (workmate, saw horses etc.) 1-1/2 meters tall. Set the engine on it, attach the strap and lift the engine slightly then remove the stand.

You can always use the stand for other things.

Started out as a router table.
 
I am a personal fan of the Workmate bench as in Rusty's pic and that has been my go to table for welding, fabricating and painting. A very versatile piece of kit as our British mates would say. Stick it up on that and spray away.

Now quit stalling and paint before the cold weather comes back.
 
with it on the stand I can go a bit higher, then strap it to the rafters and then remove the stand, it will get me off the floor and probably enough to do it all at once....

But I am stating to be a chicken sheit, so I will leave it on the stand, paint what I can, and flip her over when dry and do the rest....

at least I know it won't fall down.....well until I start flipping it over....LOL

now if I could get it to stand on the valve cover that would be the best, I could do it all and take the cover off latter and do it alone.....and while it's off, I can do the valve job I am not wanting to do .......

If I get out of the garage alive.....between the paint in the air, and the Cohiba I am smoking and the beer I am ingesting, I don't know what's going to come out blacker, my engine, my face, or my lungs....LOL

I do have a mask on......hehehehe

At least I put the dog in the house.....I remembered that much....

Boy am I getting light headed....hehhehehe

Well I want to see the pic of you smoking a Cohiba with a mask on :) and don't be painting with a stogie going or you will burn down the house and there will be no bike show on the weekend for us :(

Mmmmmm Cohiba.............one of those has my name on it and it is warm enough in the man cave. I do think I'll go "study" my "apehangers" in a blue haze. Thanks for the idea..........and the Cohiba :)
