A Special Note about Email accounts!
DO NOT SIGN UP USING hotmail, outlook, gmx, sbcglobal, att, bellsouth or email.com. They delete our forum signup emails.

A note to old forum members...
I receive numerous requests from people who can no longer log in because their accounts were deleted. As mentioned in the forum FAQ, user accounts are deleted if you haven't logged in for the past 6 months. If you can't log in, then create a new forum account. If you don't get an error message, then check your email account for an activation message. If you get a message stating that the email address is already in use, then your account still exists so follow the instructions in the forum FAQ for resetting your password.

Have you forgotten your password or have a new email address? Then read the forum FAQ for details on how to reset it.

Any email requests for "can't log in anymore" problems or "lost my password" problems will be deleted. Read the forum FAQ and follow the instructions there - that's what we have one for...

  • Returning Visitors

If you are a returning visitor who never received your confirmation email, then odds are your email provider is blockinig emails from our server. The only thing that can be done to get around this is you will have to try creating another forum account using an email address from another domain.

If you are a returning visitor to the forum and can't log in using your old forum name and password but used to be able to then chances are your account is deleted. Purges of the databases are done regularly. You will have to create a new forum account and you should be all set.

I intend on actually reviving this one. It sat in a shed for at least 25 years as far as anyone can remember. Engines stuck so depending on how badly (or if ) the liners are rusted where the rings contact them the plan is to have ot bored and go with oversize pistons and rings. Max allowable rebore is over which is 1 MM.

I'm jealous. A bike like that, for $200, would get me back on the restoration bandwagon.

first oreder of business is to soak the cylinders and get the engine unstuck so i can inspect the sleeves and determine a course of action. Everything else is of no issue as far as being catastrophic.

Crank seals are likely bad. I'd split the cases straight away.

How does the R5 differ from an RD350?

R5 is the RD's daddy. It's a piston port induction engine, whereas the RD uses reed valves.

More obvious, the R5 has a drum brake. It's an older design.

$200..wow..what a rippin' deal, even if you have to get into the engine. The rest of it looks good, all the parts are there, even the stock exhaust. Good on ya, Chuck. ;)

The RD350 was a 6 speed vs 5 speed. I had an RD back in the day. One of the most fun bikes I've owned. Good project Chuck. A buddy here also has a real nice R5.

Sweet! I've been working on a R5 cafe bike for a while. I need to find an exhaust system. If you have any leads on stock pipes or some gently used expansion chambers please let me know. The stock exhaust on E-bay is all junk and the brand new expansion chambers are bonkers expensive!

Sorry cannot help on stock pipes. May want to consider searching Japanese proxy eBay sites?

Looking forward to seeing Chuck's R5 project/progress!

PS: I am partial to 70 R5 Purple & White paint job. I buy one again just to hear the R5 Ring-ding-ding exhaust note.
