    A note to old forum members...
    I receive numerous requests from people who can no longer log in because their accounts were deleted. As mentioned in the forum FAQ, user accounts are deleted if you haven't logged in for the past 6 months. If you can't log in, then create a new forum account. If you don't get an error message, then check your email account for an activation message. If you get a message stating that the email address is already in use, then your account still exists so follow the instructions in the forum FAQ for resetting your password.

    Have you forgotten your password or have a new email address? Then read the forum FAQ for details on how to reset it.

    Any email requests for "can't log in anymore" problems or "lost my password" problems will be deleted. Read the forum FAQ and follow the instructions there - that's what we have one for...

  • Returning Visitors

    If you are a returning visitor who never received your confirmation email, then odds are your email provider is blockinig emails from our server. The only thing that can be done to get around this is you will have to try creating another forum account using an email address from another domain.

    If you are a returning visitor to the forum and can't log in using your old forum name and password but used to be able to then chances are your account is deleted. Purges of the databases are done regularly. You will have to create a new forum account and you should be all set.

78 GS750 Rear Wheel Question

I've been restoring a 78 GS750 for the past year and finally got it up and running and thought it didn't need anything else. Since this is the first bike i've worked on I took it to the local bike shop for a safety inspection and they told me that the rear wheel spacing is off by a lot and they think that the wheel was from a different year or model bike.

I have no previous history on the bike but is there anyway to find out if the wheel is from a different bike? (I would post pictures, but I haven't picked up the bike yet. I'm picking it up later today)

I'm thinking the easiest fix for this is to find a wheel, axle and spacers from a 78 GS750 but I would like to get other peoples opinion first.

I checked ebay for it and didn't have any luck. If anyone here has an extra one, I would greatly appreciate it. I've already spent way too much on this bike and am not working since I'm in school over full time so I could only pay for shipping and i'd add a little bit extra, but right now I have very little money.

After you post pics, it will be pretty easy to tell if it's the correct wheel--I have 2 rear wheels, axle and spacers--Is your wheel spoked or a mag?:cool:
 
Strange. Most of the Suzuki 18" and 17" wheels interchange other than spacer details and maybe wheel bearing ID differences on the 550 model. A photo would help, or go to a parts fishe like alpha-sports.com and have a look and compare to yours.

Do you think it would work just to get a new axle with the spacers?

is the brake disk centered in the caliper ? Is the chain/ rear sprocket aligned with the front sprocket?
 
The guy at the shop said that the caliper was in the right spot but the rear sprocket and the front sprocket were not aligned.
 
That spacer on the sprocket side doesn't look right to me. Is that a load of washers I can see packed in there? My guess is that someone has put the wrong hub spacer (or missed it altogether) in there. I reckon you're best pulling the wheel and checking what you've got against the parts diagram
 
That drive side spacer is definitely not stock... which way is it off?

Left or right viewed from the back?

That looks like a stock 78 wheel so you should be able to sort it out with an axle spacer set easy enough.
 
I'm glad to hear that I don't need a new wheel! They pulled the wheel off and they said one of the spacers looked like it was made.

Also, how do I check to make sure that everything is aligned? Do you just eyeball it or is there an actual method to check the alignment?

That appears to be the complete assembly yes. Eyeball should be good enough, you're only checking against stock parts (which should be right anyway).

That spacer on the far left of the pic with the black lines around it is the one you are missing, it fits inside the seal on the sprocket hub on one side & against the swingarm on the other side.

Hopefully you don't have anything else funky going on such as the wrong swingarm or something.
