I think that my ignition feed on your bike, I think the only difference my be the colors of your wires and the connector

the wiring diagram of your bike is the following

Very interesting! Have you got it running with the FETs? Tell us more!

I'm also interested! I've got a bad NPN Transistor on my board, and a handful of FETs kicking around. I'm thinking I'll replace the pair with FETs instead of waiting a month for the correct transistor to be shipped in from china if you got yours working.

it can be done, but we need to make a new PCB for FET drivers IR4427 .

i have used BU941ZPFI from digikey for my 1985 450l igniter box (i had to mount the larger case styles on the outside of the igniter box ) and the higher current transistors worked well as coil drivers

Cracking thread! It's so cool when someone gives their hard-earned knowledge for free. Thanks Kokar, this could come in useful in the future!

thanks Chancho196, but I think this is the meaning of this site
exchange of information helping each other :)

Kokar,
You have been very generous in your efforts to reverse engineer this ignition reproduce the PCB and even give it out it for free.I'm sure everybody appreciates your effort.
Jim

P.S. I was wondering if you know how many people got their PCB stuffed and working. I know Wallowgreen is an EE so he should have no problems if he got around to it.

The troublesome baby kat turned out to have a carburetion problem and I was already working on a second set of carbs for it when the chance of this PCB came along.

So... answer is no, I haven't needed to build this up.... yet. Still have it tucked away for when the need arises!

i run this replica igniter since 2011 with no problem.
Thank you all guys

Sorry for hi-jacking this brilliant thread. Somewhere here it was mentioned that it's suitable f?r GS450 as well. I don't dare building one myself since +/- is my weakest side in life. I did, though, find a cheap GS550 81 ignitor on the web. Will this fit my GS450 81?

Cheers

the basic difference is the plug connector and the color of the cable
you must do some homework or take the advice of a professional
you can also give me a good photo of your igniter and the connector and i try
to find out your configuration

my cable-color configuration is the following

signalgenerator1.jpg

i found on the Internet the following wiring diagram

zeil.jpg

O/W = Orange / White
B/Y = Blck / Yellow
W = White
B/W = Black / White
Br = Brown

so the only difference from mine is the color cable of the pick-up coil

I'm super excited about finding this thread! Every replacement ignitor I've found for my bike is used/untested/expensive... Kokar your work is awesome!

A couple of questions though. Is the parts list and the schematic still the same as in post #30? There's been a few posts here and there about people swapping in different or better components. If the original still works I'm fine with it!

Second any advice on where to buy this stuff in the US? I've repaired a few electronics and I've usually ordered from digikey or mouser but I can't find most of the items in the parts list....I'm searching for the part number and not getting any hits. I pretty much don't know what I'm doing though so if someone could help out with that I'd be really grateful.

Third, any advice on where/how to print out the board in the US?

Thank you! I'm hoping I can build one before the snow melts so I can finally ride my old bike again!

Hi Kokar,

Good work on this ignition work.

I have been looking at designing a computerized electronic ignition, that is as universal as possible. So I was wondering if you knew if the two ignitor inputs for this 550 ignition were bipolar signal relative to ground on each leg.

The VR pickups seem to be grounded and independent of the each other and use the engine block as a return. The later model igniter pickups for say my GS1100ED is floated from the engine but rather tied to the small pedestal inside of the igniter. The wave form looks something like this.

Have you measured this on the independent pickups?

TIA,
Jim

Kokar (or anyone else...) do you still have the .lay file for the pcb? The link you originally posted to has expired...

thanks for the answer. turned out they didn't ship to where I live. will continue looking for a 450 replacement.

Cheers

i just read this entire amazing thread and ive gotta say you a genius! But from what ive collected a set up for an 85 gs550 with electronic ignition already on it is harder to do??

I was wondering if anybody still had the updated parts list and the board mask file, or any of the files. It seem like the hosting site deleted the files. Also this was incredible work. Thanks in advance
Christian
