    A note to old forum members...
    I receive numerous requests from people who can no longer log in because their accounts were deleted. As mentioned in the forum FAQ, user accounts are deleted if you haven't logged in for the past 6 months. If you can't log in, then create a new forum account. If you don't get an error message, then check your email account for an activation message. If you get a message stating that the email address is already in use, then your account still exists so follow the instructions in the forum FAQ for resetting your password.

  • Returning Visitors

    If you are a returning visitor who never received your confirmation email, then odds are your email provider is blockinig emails from our server. The only thing that can be done to get around this is you will have to try creating another forum account using an email address from another domain.

    If you are a returning visitor to the forum and can't log in using your old forum name and password but used to be able to then chances are your account is deleted. Purges of the databases are done regularly. You will have to create a new forum account and you should be all set.

82 GS850 Rev Limiter, what is it the OEM set at?

Questions: Only asking because I spent an hour looking for the answer in both manuals and forum.

1. Is there a rev limiter built into the OEM ingnition system? I'm asking because it seems like I get the limits around 8500-9500 depending on how fast I get there.
2. If so, what is the factory setting?
3. Seems like the only way to change it is to get a new ignition system...like a dyno 2000, I am wrong in assuming this?
4. What are my choices in ignition packages.... I have another thread with my mods listed.

I think the rev limiter location on the 850g is in the valve train, when the valves start to float and the pistons start to help the valve springs close the valves. Nothing to do with the ignition system at all....

Yep, no rev limiter stock.

I've accidentally half-assed the shift from 1st to 2nd gear a few times and zinged it up to the end of the tach momentarily. But don't make a habit of this; redline is at 9K, and you can get some valve float past about 10,000 rpm. And if a shim pops out Very Bad Things happen fast.

But there are a few larger questions here: why are you asking this? Exactly how (and why on earth???) are you testing to determine that your bike can't rev past a certain point, and why do you think it's a problem?

Also, bear in mind that after 35+ years and many miles, a stock GS tach isn't the most reliable or accurate instrument -- many GS tachs get all wonky and start bouncing around at the upper end of their range, so it can be hard to tell exactly how fast the engine is spinning.

A stock GS850 that's running right will easily pull to redline in second and third gear, with a real rush of accelleration between 6,000 and 9,000 rpm. It will also hit redline in fourth gear, but that's over 100mph so not advisable on the street (again, stock GS speedos are often sort of... vague, especially at higher speeds.) Top speed of around 115mph is almost redline in fifth gear.

More of knowing the limits than anything. I had no defined lines drawn in the sand....area of operation thing.
 
Dyna sells a revlimiter if you think you need one. I have one on my GS 1000, but I have some hot rod cams in it and it pulls redline really fast, and with the money invested in this motor I can't afford for it to spit a shim with a over rev
