Hi guys!

Is it possible to put an aftermarket petcock on a GS1000EC, '78; an ordinary, simple petcock; with no vacuum and no PRIME?

Any idea which bike's petcock might fit?

I'm having problems with my OEM petcock, when on ON it's not letting through fuel like it should, the bike is choking, so I always have to have it on PRIME to ride it normally. Probably about time to buy a petcock kit, but I'd like to get rid of this problem permanently instead of just patching it up.

When its on ON it shouldnt let any fuel through... UNLESS there is vacuum applied... Also I've heard the petcock rebuild kits are garbage.

Well, when the bike is running and moving, letting fuel through to the carbs would be a preferable option from my point of view... :-\\\:p

I bought a rebuild kit last year at Louis (a major bike store-chain here in Euroe), but it didn't fit for some reason, the seals and rubbers were all wrong. Apparently GS1000D has a different petcock from the 1000E. :hmm:

I don't know if it's warranted or not, but I feel uncomfortable riding with the petcock set on PRI.

Suzuki recently tripled the price of petcocks, all except for the crappy 1980 leverless petcock that is (go figure). Finding a reasonable substitute is in order I'd say, or maybe finding a decent petcock kit so the old ones can be rebuilt.

Partsnmore.com and Z1 Enterprise sell a simple lever type petcock but you will have to come up with some way to mount these. If someone comes up with a good solution please share the info with everyone here.

Well, just buy a new vacuum petcock- quick, apparently suzuki has raised price in USA- and you'll feel comfortable again. The consensus is that the rebuild kits are a waste of time and money.

Someone on this Forum mentioned that a Kawasaki petcock is compatible . I can't confirm this...anyone?
Also who makes the petcocks Z-1 sells? Why don't they come up with a Suzuki clone?

The 'thing' with rebuild kits

The 'thing' with rebuild kits

While my bike is apart I took the petcock apart to check it out, because I notice it's been getting a little 'weepy' (not to mention floats were starting to stick). The problem turned out to be the O ring on the diaphragm, it wasn't sealing properly. I've read about the rebuild kits but I already had a spare diaphragm that came with the bike, and was in good shape - so I put it in, hey it couldn't hurt to try. Well the think really oozes gas now, not full volume but a LOT. After some studying I conclude that the metal post that the O ring mounts on is not long enough to properly seat the O ring in the petcock, thus letting gas enter from the tank at all times. No matter what I do the thing will not seat, yet when I install the diaphragm without the nylon spacer it DOES seat. My theory is that these K&L kits are sold as a one size fits all, but in reality one size does NOT fit all. These people really have no business being in business. I bet I could take the O ring off and put it on my old diaphragm, which probably was okay, but I was stupid and threw it away . SOOO, it's either try my luck with one of the Z-1 aftermarkets, or go with a '78 OEM from Bike Bandit for twice the price, over $80 I believe. Did I mention ??

I believe the mounting holes for our bikes are 44mm from center to center. Doesnt that mean we can use petcocks from any bike that uses that same distance...?

This ebay auction lists quite a few that I think would fit...

You would think so, and indeed you can swap some of them about, but on some of the bikes there either isn't a lot of clearance between the tank and the tops of the carbs or on others the fuel / vacuum outlets could line up with the frame.

Whatchoo talkin' bout, Willis?

I just spot-checked several OEM petcock prices at Partshark.com and most seem about the same as ever:

1983 GS850G:
44300-45372 (replaces 44300-45370) $55.65

1981 GS1000G:
44300-45011 $72.03

1982 GS1100E
44300-49572 (replaces 44300-49570) $72.03

1979 GS850G
44300-45011 $72.03

However, the 1978 GS1000E petcock price did seem to get completely outta hand:
1-1 COCK ASSY, FUEL
44300-44011 (replaces 44300-44010) 1 $236.16

Hmmm... any idea if the petcock from the '79 850G would fit skunks? K&L lists the same petcock rebuild kit for both models, but then again K&L stands for Krap & Lies...

Also, Z1 has several OEM-style petcocks for reasonable money:

That's good news! Glad I'm wrong. Guess I supposed too much based on the skunk petcock that went though the roof.

I've use several of the Z1 (K&L) aftermarket petcocks with no issues. One flavor has a higher fuel tube which results in having to switch to reserve earlier. I would not recommend that one for an "L" tank, as you'll be switching to reserve fairly quickly...

I think that's all the endorsement I need. I hate to give up the stock item, but I was thinking, every time the petcock needs a new part I'm going to buy a new one? tah HECK with that!

I got a kit from CarbKitCapitol.com for my 79 GS1000 L

I'm installing it today.. I'll post how it goes..
