    A note to old forum members...
    I receive numerous requests from people who can no longer log in because their accounts were deleted. As mentioned in the forum FAQ, user accounts are deleted if you haven't logged in for the past 6 months. If you can't log in, then create a new forum account. If you don't get an error message, then check your email account for an activation message. If you get a message stating that the email address is already in use, then your account still exists so follow the instructions in the forum FAQ for resetting your password.

    Have you forgotten your password or have a new email address? Then read the forum FAQ for details on how to reset it.

  • Returning Visitors

    If you are a returning visitor who never received your confirmation email, then odds are your email provider is blockinig emails from our server. The only thing that can be done to get around this is you will have to try creating another forum account using an email address from another domain.

    If you are a returning visitor to the forum and can't log in using your old forum name and password but used to be able to then chances are your account is deleted. Purges of the databases are done regularly. You will have to create a new forum account and you should be all set.

Aftermarket triple tree

I want to replace the triple tree on my '79 gs550. The stock upper has built in risers and I'd like to switch to 1" bars. I don't really want to change the rake or anything like that, just tired of limited bar/riser options. I'm going to measure the fork stanchions when I get home, I'm pretty sure they're 35mm but I've also read that they're 33mm.

If I find an upper of the correct stanchion diameter how do I know if it's compatible with the lower? I haven't worked on forks before and not sure how they match up.
 
Can't help you with your triple selection, but I am curious, ... what do you hope to gain with 1" bars that you can't find with 7/8" bars? :-k

Well it's not all about the 1" bars. More about options. But 1" bars would allow for more easily sourced internal throttle.
 
Couldn't you just have a machine shop modifie your existing handlebar mount? It wouldn't take much, just run a 1"ball mill through it and same with the caps... where are you located Straws?
 
I hadn't thought about that. I know a guy at a local shop that makes bicycle parts. No reason they couldn't do that.
 
Here's another thing I'm not sure of. If I were to find a triple tree setup from another bike, say a husqvarna whatever, would the steer tube fit? I'm much more used to the world of bicycles and things like the steer tube (what goes through the necktube on the motorcycle frame) vary between generations and sizes of bikes.

Is this the same on motos or is it standard? Does the OD of the steer tube or ID of the necktube vary with manufacturers or bike sizes?
 
There are a number of other reasons I'm not using the stock trees. I've moved the ignition and removed the gauges. It looks like **** with holes all over it, looking to clean it up a bit.

So, now back to my question. Is the stem standard on triple trees or will that vary between manufacturers?

How about between manufacturers?

**** it. I'm just going to take some calipers down to the shop and figure this out.
 
you can make any trees you want fit with a bit of ingenuity. stems can be pressed out and interchanged, bearings can be found to fit most inner/outer diameters. find a set of trees you like and MAKE them fit.......
