I receive numerous requests from people who can no longer log in because their accounts were deleted. As mentioned in the forum FAQ, user accounts are deleted if you haven't logged in for the past 6 months. If you can't log in, then create a new forum account. If you don't get an error message, then check your email account for an activation message. If you get a message stating that the email address is already in use, then your account still exists so follow the instructions in the forum FAQ for resetting your password.

Have you forgotten your password or have a new email address? Then read the forum FAQ for details on how to reset it.

Any email requests for "can't log in anymore" problems or "lost my password" problems will be deleted. Read the forum FAQ and follow the instructions there - that's what we have one for...

I am looking at the microfiche and it says I can get the CAP AIR CLEANER for $10.85 (13741-45020). Is this just the chrome cover for the air box? I need the gaskets in between the cover and the airbox only for both sides of a 1980 850. Fuel has rendered them way oversize and they don't seal, hence the bike not running well at high rpm's.

Also, how do you seal the PIA velocity stacks to the airbox better?

Hi,

Go to the hardware store and get some weatherstripping. All of us 850 riders do it. ;)

Airbox Sealing

And don't forget the top of the air filter cage assembly where it meets the top of the airbox inside.

Thank you for your indulgence,

I read about the weatherstripping already, but is this part (that I really want) discontinued? Anybody tried ordering the part lately?

I used the general weatherstripping on the top of the air filter already.

The bike is running really well over 4k rpm's. I am having issues with the off idle transition now. Turned the pilot (fuel?) screws to 4 turns out.

Looks as if you have to get new velocity stacks to cure the airbox sealing problem?

Hey Cliff,

That air filter is supposed to have (red) oil in it. Hope that was just a "trial fitting".;)

Those gaskets are not part of the chrome cover, and are not available

You caught me Ed. It's time to clean and re-oil that filter. I've got one of those fancy-schmancy K&N Recharge Kits that I should use more often.

You are supposed to oil the filter? I am not familiar with this process, could you elaborate for me?

The filter in that photo is an aftermarket K&N filter, and these use a special K&N oil that's red.

The gray foam OEM filter comes pre-oiled, and the green foam Uni brand filter needs a light dusting of any decent air filter oil. You can also install the Uni filter dry and allow normal crankcase vapors to do the rest -- it'll be oily soon enough.

Also, the only way to get the airbox/carb boots to seal better is to buy new ones. They're only $7 - $8 each, and you'll be astonished at the difference between the wizened old boots and the new ones.
