DO NOT SIGN UP USING hotmail, outlook, gmx, sbcglobal, att, bellsouth or email.com. They delete our forum signup emails.

A note to old forum members...
I receive numerous requests from people who can no longer log in because their accounts were deleted. As mentioned in the forum FAQ, user accounts are deleted if you haven't logged in for the past 6 months. If you can't log in, then create a new forum account. If you don't get an error message, then check your email account for an activation message. If you get a message stating that the email address is already in use, then your account still exists so follow the instructions in the forum FAQ for resetting your password.

Have you forgotten your password or have a new email address? Then read the forum FAQ for details on how to reset it.

Any email requests for "can't log in anymore" problems or "lost my password" problems will be deleted. Read the forum FAQ and follow the instructions there - that's what we have one for...

  • Returning Visitors

If you are a returning visitor who never received your confirmation email, then odds are your email provider is blockinig emails from our server. The only thing that can be done to get around this is you will have to try creating another forum account using an email address from another domain.

If you are a returning visitor to the forum and can't log in using your old forum name and password but used to be able to then chances are your account is deleted. Purges of the databases are done regularly. You will have to create a new forum account and you should be all set.

Anyone interested in an 850 resto? Nothing custom but paint!

I'm having trouble deciding on whether or not to spray gloss or matte clear. Gloss is way cheaper.

While gloss is cheaper I think you will have better results with matte as less light spots will apear and hide the work underneeth.

That was kind of my thought on it. There are a lot of imperfections in the graphics.

I made a little progress last night. Today was spent filling out applications for work. :( I tried a different water technique that I'm not too fond of. I wish I'd of done the water the same as the other side.

No painting done today due to rain, BUT!!! I found a flattener for lacquer clears carried locally thats only 31$ a qt. I thought I was going to have to adhesion promote the color for a urethane clear and hope n pray for a failure to NOT occur.

Finished the base on the tank. That was a LOT of work. This tank was in rough shape. More photos to come.

No divots from old paint and missing and/or bent metal. I took it all down to bare metal and bondo'd where necessary. I know this is parts of the bike that no one will see but me. I think when its all put back together this will make a big difference in the finish.

I was going to ask what part that was, but then I saw the second pic and it all makes sense now. Your bike is definitely unique. Personally I think a gloss clear coat would look better. Three or four coats should bury your graphics nicely. Those colors will really pop all shiny. Are you going to clean the paint off the screw heads on the engine?

I haven't thought about that. I guess if I was doing this project for someone else then yeah I would, but as it sits?...I might just let it ride.

Thanks for the compliments too! I guess I'll have to really stare at the finished product for a while before I make a decision about that clear.

Fender is done. I haven't worked on it much at all in a long time. Started a new job, painting bikes actually...lol. By chance a neighborhood body shop needed someone who wanted to paint bikes and I was sick and tired of A/C so I called em out of the blue. It just so happened they were looking. :D Talk about the Lord working in mysterious ways!

More pix to enjoy, if you're enjoying this thread.

Yeah I love pin striping. Not really a do it yourselfer's kind of project, tho if you were interested enough in buying the brushes then you'll enjoy striping everything in our house. Its one of the hardest things I've gotten the pleasure to fool with, but I don't think any paint job is complete without stripes. I'm going to pm you some resources on striping.

Thanks for the complements. :)

Still no progress. I'm buried under other stuff and my garage is ridiculously full. I'm toying with the idea of selling this bike. I'll put it back together and you can run it before it goes if you're interested.

Just a thought related to a comment above, but a black engine with bare stainless fasteners looks pimp:

Bad weather and caught up on everything I can do inside means slow progress. Leafing the fender today. Its my first time trying gold leaf so as soon as I get it all sorted out I'll post pix. :D

Edited for pic. Waiting for the last coat of gold to dry then I'll stripe it.

BTW, those contrasting bolts look awesome on that motor. I really like the gold caps too. Looks like the same color as late model calipers.
