Appropriate pricing for a 79gs1000e

So I'm thinking about upsizing to a larger GS as mine just doesn't do it for me, I have about 150psi compression and the bike runs smooth other than a bit of an issue low end, but to me it seems tired even though it has the right numbers to still want to pull well.

That being said, there's a 79GS1000e for sale, it's been in dry storage for about a year and the guy said it needs a new battery and fresh gas, in my opinion a carb rebuild is a must for any older bike that has been sitting that period of a time, especially one with 4 carbs.

The bike has 47k miles, it's not original as there's atleast an exhaust and fairing, but overall it looks pretty good, nothing immaculate but my 650 isn't either.

I'm wondering, what would be a fair price for a non running 79gs1000e, his number is up there a good bit in my opinion but then again it's a bit of a weird time for these bikes and I know the 79GS1000e is a more demanding model than most.

Just let me know as I really do need to get a bigger bike to satisfy my speed needs but I don't want to get a crotch rocket, it'll be an even bigger risk for my well-being.

Also if there's any questions I should ask let me know

from the chain side you can either see a gas or oil residue on the motor and also the rear wheel yo cansee surface rust on the sprocket and the chain might need a replacement

you should see the number hes asking.....

ill get a picture of it to show its condition off.
yes pristine ones fetch a good price this is far from pristine and that paint is probably hiding some dents and in humid fla rust and misery.
offer 5 and walk away

That's a "78" model tank, those are really rare & really hard to find & fetch pretty big dollars if in good shape.. If it is in good shape, shouldn't it fetch near $500?

thats something i was worried about, if he knows that the tank alone is worth that much IF the inside is as clean as the outside, but it definitely needs work all around besides the tank

Yeah considering the tank maybe more than $500 these days.... It does look as if the base gasket may be leaking on it (although it could be oil running down from a leak valve cover or head gasket...)

I paid 8 or 900 for my 79 about a year ago, I can't recall at the moment. It had some nice bits on it and turned out well. There's a Southern CA tax in effect here so I felt it was a good price.

Not being able to hear it run, see that it's charging, etc. makes it a potentially expensive crapshoot. Mine had 34K and had a fresh top end but I had no way of verifying that. I had to take the head off to get a mangled exhaust bolt out, and luckily he spoke the truth, inside was good. Also it wasn't charging but it was just the reg/rec and I had a spare from a GS1100E that worked fine replacing both units. And the wiring to the Dyna was wrong. As usual it adds up, I would say about as much invested in it as purchase price. Great bikes for sure, I love it.

Well the thing is in looking more for a project as it saves me money on the budget I'm on, if I can knock this guy down to a realistic price I think I'll take it

Oh man I wouldn't even touch it if it was free! That thing has money pit written all over it.

That's definitely possible, but if I can get it for well under 1k and if it needed to be parted out because of cost issues it is worth the money in parts?

You got a 650 & soon there wasn't enough power, if you get the GS1000, soon you there will not be enough power, Just find a 16V 1100. I did that same thing, started with a "77" GS750 & thought it was too big for me, less than a year traded for a "78" GS1000 within a year it wasn't enough, traded for a 16V GS1100E. Just say'in...Been There Done That.

No worries on labor, and the gs1000e says it's an 11.7 quarter mile, changing the sprockets and possibly doing an intake (not pods) could better that number, I'm not too worried about top speed as much as acceleration and I like the look of these bikes alot but hey you might definitely be right! If I can find a 16v 1100 that'd be nice.

well, i was able to call the seller and talk to him a bit about it, sure enough it does leak oil where the cylinder wall meets the crankcase, he has never done any valve adjustments, and its been in storage for about 3 years now, the turn signal flasher is broken as he described the turn signals dont work.

i offered him 800 saying this is non running and non riding, 2500 is a very far fetch for something being that it might not even be able to move with help if the brakes are also locked on the bike. he said theres no way and said 1800 is a price he would do, he said 800 is less than he paid for it and i said when you bought it the bike did run and ride, hes had nobody else except me message him about the bike, so i let him know if he doesn't have any luck to contact me again.

he said hes gonna put gas in the tank and see if it runs, i let him know if it does actually run, i need a video of it idling on its own without choke, and an acceleration so i can hear if its running on all 4, im hoping it doesnt run when he tries to get it going as i know the price is going to stay at 1800 if it does.

i couldnt offer 500, i guess thats my problem, but seeing as the tank alone is worth that much, it wouldnt be hard to make my money back on the bike if i were to have to part it out. get this, his nephew put the price on the bike not him, they seen a gs1000e in "showroom" condition for 4500 so i guess that means a non running, oil leaking one is worth 2500.

there will be updates if any update does happen.

What is the bollocks about the tank being worth 500. Maybe in perfect condition to a stupid collector.
Its thickly repainted and you've no way to know if its rusted or has pinholes or if its got body filled dents.

Goys gonna start a bike with dirty carbs and unadjusted valves just lessens its value more.

That parts kinda on him if he wants to be stubborn on the price.

How can you tell the tank was repainted? Also since he's putting gas in it, if he messages me back I'll ask the condition on the inside of the tank.
