Where might one go in Vancouver to get a good steer on getting a bike?
Coming from a KZ400B and looking at Suzi twin or four 650 capacity.
Barely run in SVs seem cheap atm.
Asking for my son, Vancouver resident but currently on the island working remotely.

I don't know if he still has it but Derrick { Big83 } had a GS 550 for sale as he was moving into a smaller place ...... I don't know of anyone selling myself but if he is on the island Trevor might know someone over there .....

I?m in Victoria and am pretty in tune with bikes for sale. Pm me and I?d be happy to try and help. Cheers

I'd be willing to do a deal, but it's not going to be as good as the one Trevor just got on that Bandit.

Thank you all. Looks like he has to start from scratch for a bike license in BC.
The Irish car permit is fine but not the bike?
What is it with those rules about lights at crossings?

I went over with Derrick { BigD83 } when he took his road test. He needed a licensed rider to ride with him to get there.... That test is a b!tch. I strongly recommend getting hold of a 250 to take it as I wouldn't have wanted to walk one of our 500 lb. GS's through the pylon test .... I have no doubt we have some weird crossing light rules, but just out of curiosity which ones are you talking about ?

I showed up to do the parking lot test on my 1980 gs750e....should have seen the looks from the other motorcyclists and the instructor..lol...they were all on 250 enduros....anyway I went first...hard acceleration to hard stopping...weaving in and out through the cones...pushing the bike through the cones. When I finished the older instructor turns to the young guys on their enduros and says "I hope you guys were watching, because that is how it's done". I was very pleased. :)
If your son is here for a bit I suggest he take this course http://www.visafetycouncil.com/
I too am curious what you mean about our traffic lights.
Cheers

What does a flashing red light mean?
a) Stop and proceed with caution
b) Stop as you would at a Stop sign

bit confusing?

Yeah that's right . Just treat it like a stop sign..... Can't think { off the top of my head } where there is one right now ..... I think it is also one of the settings on a malfunctioning regular three colour crossing light ......

It's an interesting question because it is one of those "most correct" answers. As well, it is absolutely imperative on the written test to not read anything into the question. If it is not on the page, then ignore it.

In real life, the situation matters.

What kind of crossing, if any, is mentioned in the question? Pedestrian? Intersection? Level train crossing?

To make it even more confusing, here is the section in the Drive Safe book. Clear as mud, right?

flashing red lights — a flashing red light means that you must come to a complete stop. After you stop, you may move into the intersection when it is clear and safe to do so. ... If you are stopped at one of these types of intersections, wait until there is a safe gap before going through or turning.

RAILWAY Crossings? Bl**dy H*ll! If you stop and proceed against flashing red you will get hit by a train. Not all railway crossings have gates.

otherwise a flashing red a "stop and proceed when safe" ..an example is seen at High risk intersections where a secondary highway intersects to a "main" highway.... At a traffic light -controlled intersection, it is a four-way stop. Traffic lights "default" to four way stop-flashing red when there's a power failure....

They have those in California too, flashing red lights. I thought I had read up on all the signals and signs etc, but last year driving through a little town just south of Bakersfield came across a crossroad with flashing red lights. Confused me, so I slowed down, checked nothing coming from either side and carried on through. At the hotel that evening, googled it and found out you have to stop, so then was worried in case there were any cameras at the junction and whether I would be in the s..t when we dropped the car back at the hire place !.

Such intersections may be obsolete now, but I can remember red lights when for miles in every direction not another vehicle or person was in sight. After a few seconds of waiting, I'd think, "What am I, stupid, a part of the machine?" Then I'd just go. Of course today, "Smile, you're on Candid Camera."

Then there is the school of thought that goes, fresh Red means accelerate or you'll get rear ended, fresh Green means STOP or you'll get hit by the guys taking the earlier advice.

A couple of years ago I accelerated my cage to run a fresh red (after checking it was 'safe' to do so). I accompanied with a slight toot of the horn. After an unmarked car's officer checked my papers, he asked why I hit the horn. I said something to the effect of, 'a little extra safety.'

"You shouldn't do that," he said. "I wouldn't have noticed you."

Almost reminds me of the time an officer instructed me to start the car, put it in gear and leave, right after I had shown him the open Tall Boy between my legs. "Get out of here," he said.

Go figure. (No ticket either time.)

Not every cop comes down with the hammer every time. The better ones know when, like their fourth time noticing you this month.
I rolled up to a stale red splitting the outer two of three lanes, rolling on the power just as I hit the line planning to get and stay 100m ahead of the cages.
Just as I crossed the line on green accelerating hard I saw a police bike on the inside lane.
Pulling up alongside he asked, what are you doing back there?
I flipped the visor and said, have to get away from cages, they're all mad *&@"%&@!
He nodded and we carried on side by side for a mile or so chatting about this and that, then he saluted and peeled off.
The three lines of cages behind didn't come next or near me for the next four miles as I stayed at the 30mph speed limit in the middle of the middle lane.
I suppose it helps if your bike is the same colour as the cops and are in black with a white Sam Browne and helmet

Well, common sense applies. I've been in the middle of the flat prairie, stopped, looking up and down the track 10 miles....not quite the same as a serious rail-crossing where the reds are flashing, the bell is ringing, and the gates are down...(and yet people get hit by trains about once a year...)

Or a school-bus. Red lights flash, you stop! Nobody wants a kid crying and bleeding under the wheels...and yet, people regularly go round...
