A note to old forum members...
I receive numerous requests from people who can no longer log in because their accounts were deleted. As mentioned in the forum FAQ, user accounts are deleted if you haven't logged in for the past 6 months. If you can't log in, then create a new forum account. If you don't get an error message, then check your email account for an activation message. If you get a message stating that the email address is already in use, then your account still exists so follow the instructions in the forum FAQ for resetting your password.

Have you forgotten your password or have a new email address? Then read the forum FAQ for details on how to reset it.

Any email requests for "can't log in anymore" problems or "lost my password" problems will be deleted. Read the forum FAQ and follow the instructions there - that's what we have one for...

  • Returning Visitors

If you are a returning visitor who never received your confirmation email, then odds are your email provider is blockinig emails from our server. The only thing that can be done to get around this is you will have to try creating another forum account using an email address from another domain.

If you are a returning visitor to the forum and can't log in using your old forum name and password but used to be able to then chances are your account is deleted. Purges of the databases are done regularly. You will have to create a new forum account and you should be all set.

Building/equipping a workshop/garage.

Not really wanting to torpedo your idea ...
Punny, very punny. :encouragement:

The torpedo is temporary. Just trying to get through the sticker shock of the new building, will have something better by next cold season.

Power everywhere.... in the ceiling & floor if poss as well as near your benches & loads of lights! If you have a bike lift consider putting walk on led lighting in the floor below it to help get rid of the shadows. :)

Heated padded flooring in key work areas might be really nice too...

Hard Work Doesn't Go Un-Noticed

Stay tuned to this channel. As outlined in my last post, lots of stuff will be happening in the next few days, will probably be done by Monday or Tuesday.

.

I'll be on the lookout Steve. I'm happy to see a project that makes a GS owner share his experience. Appreciate the efforts of this thread!

Too late to put power in the floor, but there will be power all around the walls, and on several different circuits.

In the ceiling? :-k Thanks for the reminder. I have some twist-lock connectors that were removed from a discontinued project at work a few years ago. They would work well in the ceiling. :encouragement:

Pictures? Links?

Have not seen (or even thought of) heated padding, but I already use some of the cheapo floor mats from Harbor Freight in my current garage. It is attached to the house and can be heated, but you are right, that extra bit of insulation under the feet is wonderful.

I'm in the planning stages of my shop now, and I've been considering radiant heat in the concrete floor. The buy-in is a killer. My shop will likely be 30'x40', and it's looking like the entire system will be $4-5k installed. I'm sure I'll love it come winter, but it's hard to pull the trigger.

The roof is done.

The stairs are in. Will need to frame the door for access under them (where I plan on putting the compressor).

The end walls of the attic are framed.

The brick for the front wall is here, should be put up on Friday.

It's all happening rather quickly, now. Siding on the other three sides will probably happen Friday, as well, along with the windows. About all that will be left is trenching for utilities and final grading.

All in all it's just... well, you know.

Exciting times at Steveville!

Woo Hoo!

Stevenville, an exciting place to live.

It would be interesting to have a doorway framed into the attic end - kinda like a barn hay loft - for if you ever want to move in -or out something..
A simple block & tackle hoist on an extended rafter ridge beam would be hanging outside....
Just my 2? - probably too late - but an idea...

On one of these ends ... ??

Nice timing with the weather Steve, looks fantastic inside and out!

Very nice! Are you building it yourself Steve or hired out?
It is DEFINITELY hired out. I can be pretty handy with a hammer, but it would take me a year of weekends to do it. This way, I am assured that it is done CORRECTLY by people who know how to do their particular specialties, instead of one well-intentioned individual who has an idea that these specialties exist, but doesn't really know how to do them.

Trust me, it has been discussed, but with the span of the trusses, it was decided to keep with "light" storage capabilities. I don't know what the designed load-carrying capacity is, but I never did plan on storing anything up there that I was not willing to carry up the stairs.

And, if we did do a 'hay loft' door, it would be at the end without the stairs. Not just to avoid the stairs, but that is the end that will be over a paved parking pad, meaning "easy access".

Not a lot to show for the day, in spite of some great weather. Mostly a lot of detail work.

Sheeting installed on the ends of the attic.

Side door and vinyl wrap installed.

Bathroom walls framed.

Doorway framed for access under stairs. Yeah, the stairs go right through there, but you won't see the door from the stairway side.

Tomorrow (Saturday) will be BUSY. If everything goes as planned, windows will be installed,
brick will be installed on the front and siding on the rest of it. Should look a LOT different. :encouragement:

Looks good. Do you mind if I ask how much the Attic Trusses added to the cost? Over plain trusses, I mean. Looks like a good idea.

If it is not too late or they are not yet installed, before the siding goes on, install external upper and lower venting for your compressor "room" under the stairs.
Not only does it need a good supply of fresh air to compress but they also tend to create a lot of heat when running. You were planning on insulating that "room"
already anyway for noise abatement correct?

I have no idea what the difference was, as "plain" trusses were never considered. I wanted the upstairs storage from day one.

I have not yet decided how to do it, but yes, there will be venitlation. First thing will be to find a compressor of adequate size that will fit in the space.
