hi there, just wondered if someone could tell me the correct steering bearing size for a 1980 gs550, an english store "wemoto" sells the sizes 48x25x15mm upper and 48x27x14 lower, but cmsnl sells Upper 25 x 47 x 15mm
Lower 30 x 55 x 17mm, so what the hell is going on there, which one is correct?, cheers, george.

the steering neck measures approx 48mm top and bottom (where the races sit) so i'm guessing its the former thats correct (hopefully as thats what i've ordered), maybe cmsnl have it wrong?!

I would trust the OEM Suzuki source over aftermarket. The parts fishe has errors from time to time but they are rare.

so a 55mm outer dia bearing will with in the 48mm opening at the bottom of the steering stem?, i'm confused

Are you sure your bike is a 1980 model year? The early model 550 came with loose ball type bearings and the sizes may be different.

it was registered 81, is there anyway of me finding out when it was manufactured?, it has the later type cv carbs and no kickstart etc, so its definitely a later model, and was told a 1980 model by the previous owner, frame number starts "154xxx" if thats any help

Sounds like the later type. Did it have loose ball steering bearings or tapered rollers? The later bikes had the tapered rollers. If all else fails you could order the OEM bearings. They are not overly expensive.

it had tapered rollers when i took it apart, but obviously i haven't owned it since 1980 so i have no idea what it came with standard, my best guess at this point is that although its a later model is has the earlier ball bearing type frame/yokes that someone has changed to tapered rollers, hence me needing the smaller sized tapered rollers than the updated model gs550s
