Dash Battery Light On All The Time

Hello i am new to this site but not to GS i have drag raced them for over twenty years. I have recently purchased a 1985 GS1150E and it has 2 electrical issues that dose not stop me from ridding it they just are annoying. One is the Batt light in the dash is on all the time and i know why it is because the battery probe is not installed because it was removed and it is not available from Suzuki any more the battery i have dose not accept one either, neither of these are a problem if some one can tell me if there is a way to trick the system so the light will go out i did find the wire that the probe goes in but i am not sure what it is looking for (voltage or resistance) to turn the dash indicator light off.I know removing the bulb would work but i was hoping not to take the dash apart only as a last option, Has anybody figured out how to trick it when they switched to a sealed battery?. The other item is the tail/stop indicator randomly comes on and off but all the lights are lighting there are no bulbs out or flickering that i see.I was told this could be from a bad ground dose this make sense and where would i start to check for this circuit. Any help would be greatly appreciated thanks.( I do have FSM for the bike)

The battery probe is meant to stick down into one of the cells, which will show a voltage above zero, if it was still wet with acid. When the acid level dropped (in that cell), the probe would not see the voltage and then turn on the light. To get around that, you can connect it to a switched power line.

If you get stuck or need help, I'm just a few miles north of you, on the south side of Dayton.

bert, Welcome to the forum.

You don't know how lucky you are to be offered personal assistance from Steve. Definitely take him up on his offer.

edit: Oh, wait.....Loveland, CO ------- Southwest oHIo / :torn:

I've read here was some people pull the bulb in the cluster.

Yep, welcome to the GSR, Then yes, what steve said about the batt. light, I connected mine to the tail light wire cause it was right there close... The other problem sounds like maybe what several 1150's have got. On mine sometimes maybe one indicator while other times may be a few of them, usually not full on nor off but trying to sort'f flicker, sometimes all would be good while other times they may do it almost constantly. I read several write-ups about it, but never found a for sure fix. Hoping you find something simple with yours.

Thanks to all of you for welcoming me and the advice as far as the batt light so if i understand it you are telling me i can hook the batt light wire to a full 12 volt switched supply. I was thinking since it was in just one cell it was looking for like 2.1 volts because that is what each cell measures but i might be thinking wrong that is why i was asking for help just don"t want to put the wrong voltage to the wire and burn out the relay control box that runs all the indicators in the dash. Also i forgot to ask the only other electrical issue i have is when i turn my turn signals on they light up all bulbs are good but they wont flash do you think this is a bad flasher or the turn signal control module any way to test them both i do have an extra flasher but i do not know the condition of if for sure it was one i had for an old bike wire harness that i removed when i built a drag bike.

Sounds like a short in a ground somewhere in the lighting circuit to make all the lights come one at the same time. Or possibly the switch.

No all the lights don"t come on at the same time when i turn the turn signal to the left turn both front and rear left come on and when i switch it to the right both front and rear right come on as they should they just don"t flash they stay on solid as if there was a light out but they are all working that is why i am leaning towards the turn control relay or the turn flasher just not sure how to rule one or the other out.

LED bulbs will make it not flash if you converted to those. Can add a resistor to make them work. But sounds like a flasher relay if not.

Welcome Bert. My tail / stop warning has randomly flickered for 20 plus years. I've learned to ignore it and check my lights pre-ride. I pulled the bulb out of the battery indicator when I had the cluster open for other reasons.

Pics of your 1150 would be cool....

Ok thanks i will due some more checking of the relay i found an extra one in my stuff i don"t think i have an extra turn signal control module but i will have to look if not i will have to find one. hear is the bike i am working on.

Congrats bert, that's, by far, the prettiest GS Suzuki ever built, not the most comfortable but unquestionably the best looking... That's my opinion and ought to be everybody elses ':eagerness::encouragement::eagerness::encouragement::eagerness::encouragement:s.

Thank you i love it (only 4800 original miles) i bought it because it reminds me closely to the street drag bike i made out of a GS1100E that i ran for several years.

Hooked up the battery indicator light that is in the dash to a switched 12 volt supply (license plate light ) and it is out now i know this was a minor item to worry about but thanks to you guys i now have a indicator light that is functional and working as it should. The next thing is the turn signals not flashing i will work on them next (flasher and or flasher control ?)

Signals: if your bike doesn’t have any fancy self-cancelling mumbo jumbo, you may be able to replace your relay with one of these. See if yours look the same. It was a plug and play on my old Suzuki. Relay crapped out about a year ago. Same one fixed my kid’s more modern cheap Chinese dirt bike. Don’t worry about the LED label. Neither of our bikes have LED signal.

OK thanks for the advice mine is a three pin and it dose have the self canceling threw the turn signal control relay witch is separate from the flasher. i am going to remove the flasher first and test it but i do have a back up one but i need to test it as well i think i have a control unit as well not tested not sure how to test that (more connections).

Ah, OK. People have fussed with those self-cancelling units on this forum for years. I don’t think I’ve ever read of a successful repair, or even a half-a$$ed bodge that returned its function once it fries. You could use the search and see if you find anything.
