De-stinking Penelope

Chuck, I'm going to take the parts into work a little at a time to wash them up so I can inspect them properly. I still need to measure the cylinder bores today and some time later this week, break down the cylinder head. After that I'll be able to assess the damages properly. I still need to figure out if my sand blaster will work well using glass beads so I can 'de'-corrode the cases.

You know what you can do in the mean time if you'd like, get a price on shipping the complete engine and ask Randy if He has a crank that's already removed from an engine.
If this thing only needs a crank and He doesn't have one that's removed, I'll find a source for one rather than you breaking down an engine for just a crank.

Like the rest of the components, I'll measure the chain and make a decision weather or not to replace it.

I work s l o w l y... but methodically. Plus I've still got to finish the wall in the back bedroom and put front brakes on Marys car.

Glass beads is what i use on my engines and side covers and it does a super nice job.. Use a spray distance of maybe 4 or 5 inches and all will look like smooth satin finish.

I suspect you are talking about using your hand held spot blaster for doing the bead blasting? The one we used on penelope's rim at your house in Hazeltucky. It did a nice fine job and exactly the surface finish I'm looking to achieve.

Dale..yes that gun and glass beads. I will send it along with whatever engine parts I can help you with. EDIT...I am down at Franks and we got the valve cover issue resolved, Thats why my post is showing up under his name...

Thanks Chuck/Frank! I think that will do a better job than the full sized one I have.

The valve cover fairy showed up bearing gifts this afternoon...
(thanks Chuck!, I owe you big time again)

It looks like you were correct Ed, that emblem was the best looking of the three. This looks like the set I'll be rehabbing sometime in the future.

I'll take the cylinders and pistons with me to work tomorrow as I didn't get to measuring them over the weekend and other than throwing the oil pan in the parts washer to soak, not much else to post.

Frank Z will be PMing you concerning your sand blasting the cover while on the head. He has that used Veshra gasket we replaced yesterday..Its all in one piece and not torn. We were thinking it would be a good setup gasket if youd like to have it..

Chuck, I have a spare really thin aftermarket gasket and plan on bolting my old cover on the cylinder head when I blast it. But I've a bit of measuring components long before that comes about.

I'm hoping this head isn't bad like the ones Ed had.

I just looked the starter clutch and gear I got from Ed, readying it and the rotor so I can take it to work to clean and assemble it.

By bad you mean warped?? If it is it can be rehabbed yes?? Like they do with car heads on those big sanding tables??

I hope He chimes in and says what it was for sure. I know he bought cutters to reface the seats, so I'm thinking valve guide related??

Is it split from the jugs? have you gotten a peek at the valves from below at least? How did the look..cooked pretty bad?

I removed the head first then I pulled the cylinders.

At a casual glance, the pistons, rings, cylinder and valves look good. The rings aren't stuck, no scoring on the sides of the pistons, the carbon on top the pistons and heads of the valves aren't too black or heavy, no evidence of oil burning. So, other than the two broken starter clutch bolts and part of the third bolt coming up missing, which more than likely took out the starter gear bearings, everything looks relatively good.

I was looking for pics but didnt see any, so thats what made me ask..Now that you mentiopn it i do recall a post here you talked about the tops of the pistons..

Spent a few hours this past Saturday and again today cleaning up a few odds and ends.

To measure is to know...

To measure is to know...

Brought home the cylinder bore gauge to measure the cylinders.

Need to check the free length of clutch springs as well.

Any damage to the surfaces of the clutch basket and hub from all the drag racing or whatever the bike was subjected to???
