A Special Note about Email accounts!
DO NOT SIGN UP USING hotmail, outlook, gmx, sbcglobal, att, bellsouth or email.com. They delete our forum signup emails.

A note to old forum members...
I receive numerous requests from people who can no longer log in because their accounts were deleted. As mentioned in the forum FAQ, user accounts are deleted if you haven't logged in for the past 6 months. If you can't log in, then create a new forum account. If you don't get an error message, then check your email account for an activation message. If you get a message stating that the email address is already in use, then your account still exists so follow the instructions in the forum FAQ for resetting your password.

Have you forgotten your password or have a new email address? Then read the forum FAQ for details on how to reset it.

Any email requests for "can't log in anymore" problems or "lost my password" problems will be deleted. Read the forum FAQ and follow the instructions there - that's what we have one for...

  • Returning Visitors

If you are a returning visitor who never received your confirmation email, then odds are your email provider is blockinig emails from our server. The only thing that can be done to get around this is you will have to try creating another forum account using an email address from another domain.

If you are a returning visitor to the forum and can't log in using your old forum name and password but used to be able to then chances are your account is deleted. Purges of the databases are done regularly. You will have to create a new forum account and you should be all set.

Exhaust Gaskets

Hi,

If you're not going to get the real thing, I think you'd have better luck with some kind of exhaust tape. Wrap enough around the joint to let the clamp get a good bite and seal properly.

Thank you for your indulgence,

BassCliff

Lordy, we do get some tightwads around here...

You know, there are starving CB and KZ riders out there who would get down on their knees for the chance to spend only $42 to make their bikes run right. :D

No, steel wool won't do anything. Once you order the correct exhaust seals, you can get by until they arrive by using a "muffler bandage" from an auto parts store along with a couple of hose clamps. This involves a total expenditure of around $10, but maybe you can harvest a few rusty hose clamps from the neighbor's car or something.

Haha thanks guys. I will eventually replace with the correct item I was just curious. Thanks for the info!

Those stupid exhaust gaskets are nose bleed expensive, so to me at least, finding an alternate is alluring. Unfortunately, I don't know of any. It would be cool to find another model bike with usable, and cheaper, substitute parts. There are some aftermarket Z1 parts so that may be worth a look. If you find anything please post back here with your source.

Good luck

Some old boilers used to use a semi-flexible asbestos thick sheeting on the inside of the panels. I've got about half a sheet left and that does the job a treat. Also useful for exhaust gaskets if you can be bothered.

I have wondered about something like this (I have no idea if the diameter is right, so don't order any on my say-so without measuring.) It's braided silica sleeving that will withstand up to 2300 degrees F. A foot is just under $8:

There's also fiberglass sleeving good up to 1000 degrees. That oughta do it. Under two bucks a foot:

The main problem is that neither of these materials is rigid enough to install easily.
