    A note to old forum members...
    I receive numerous requests from people who can no longer log in because their accounts were deleted. As mentioned in the forum FAQ, user accounts are deleted if you haven't logged in for the past 6 months. If you can't log in, then create a new forum account. If you don't get an error message, then check your email account for an activation message. If you get a message stating that the email address is already in use, then your account still exists so follow the instructions in the forum FAQ for resetting your password.

    Have you forgotten your password or have a new email address? Then read the forum FAQ for details on how to reset it.

    Any email requests for "can't log in anymore" problems or "lost my password" problems will be deleted. Read the forum FAQ and follow the instructions there - that's what we have one for...

  • Returning Visitors

    If you are a returning visitor who never received your confirmation email, then odds are your email provider is blockinig emails from our server. The only thing that can be done to get around this is you will have to try creating another forum account using an email address from another domain.

    If you are a returning visitor to the forum and can't log in using your old forum name and password but used to be able to then chances are your account is deleted. Purges of the databases are done regularly. You will have to create a new forum account and you should be all set.

Hi

I posted a picture and was wondering if anyone might recognize whether this might be a vintage or collectible fairing? I believe it’s for a 78-79 GS1000 and appearently many other makes and models.

What are your thoughts?

Looks Like an Emgo Fairing...I have one in my stash of parts and had one on my 83 that got crashed....they are around 100 bucks new
 
I never had a motorcycle with a windshield or a fairing but my next bike will get a small fairing like yours! I have driven motorcycles with both fairings and windshields and I have a question I have never seen discussed: How can you people see through those things at night? Wouldn't a clear windscreen by itself or as the windshield part of a fairing be better? I thought maybe people wanted tinted windscreens to help with bright sunlight reflections but you could wear sunglasses during the day. At least at night you wouldn't be looking through tinted glass.

I've been riding motorcycles since my mid twenties and I'm now 72. I only started wearing full face helmets in my late 50s. Before that, it was goggles!

None of my fairings have had windshields as tall as some I see. I always have them just below eye level (sometimes several inches below) so that I can see over them but still get the airflow deflected over my head.

Same here. I had a fairing just like that,but made from fiberglass on a 350 I had in the 70's.
I have a Vetter Quicksilver w/ the tall screen on my GS450E now.
 
Been riding for over 60 years and have run a shield or fairing for 50 of those years. It’s a whole lot less tiring on a long ride. 2” above or below eye level as rule of thumb.

Never had a problem with a tinted one, the sweet spot is generally below eyeline anyway as others said. That Emgo fairing & others like it tend to concentrate wind blast up under you chin which was not really an improvement, I ran one for a while but generally prefer the Suzuki naked and consider that style mostly for looks....
 
I will look for a small fairing with a clear plastic windscreen and if sunlight reflects off of it and I find it annoying, I will wear sunglasses. I don't see the appeal of a tinted windscreen other than from an appearance standpoint. I don't like tinted windows in a car unless it's just along the top of the windshield only. Night vision is more important to me.
 
Unless you're four feet tall, you never look through the windshield on that Emgo fairing. It could be made of solid opaque plastic.

Hey Carlos, Just saw your post, that fairing definitely looks like one of the Emgo units.
I had a similar one on an old GS750 years back.

They’re not exactly vintage or rare, but they’ve been around forever and still show up on a lot of late '70s and early '80s bikes.
Pretty common on the GS1000, so your guess is probably right.

They’re more style than function, wind tends to hit you under the chin, but they do look great, especially on cafe builds.
You can still find them new, usually in black, and easy to repaint if you're going custom.

Let us know what you decide to do with it, could be a cool touch on a vintage build.

Lizzy has been subtly inserting links to Viking Bags website in numerous posts. Otherwise has contributed to many threads without the spammy links. There was another new member doing the same thing a few months ago. I called him out. He went away. Probably same guy. Looks like dpep edited the link out of post #16 in this thread. Here's how I see it: It's OK to work somewhere (most of us do), and it's OK to like to share info on their products because it's something your proud of. But at least own up to it. Maybe me (and Dave Grimly) are wrong. But I don't think so.

Yep, it would be fine if Lizzywhite (or the owner of Viking Bags) at least paid a sub and as a commercial entity they could be quite open about supporting the site with a bit extra, too.
I'm also wondering if Lizzywhite is an AI, because the advice she/he/it has been handing out is nothing more than a re-hash of previous advice by other posters.
I'm thoroughly pyssed off with sneaky plugs. These are underhanded tactics that belong in the 1990s, when businesses decided the internet was one giant free advertising medium for them.
