Does anyone know of a source for a replacement brake-line kit for a 1980 GS850G? I'd like to replace the factory rubber lines with some nice stainless braided line, and would prefer to do it without having to source all of the individual banjo fittings, etc. Maybe a pipe dream, but I figured it wouldn't hurt to ask. ;)

Otherwise, does someone that has done this happen to have a parts list as to what would be required? I can certainly figure it out myself, but thought that it's likely been done, and maybe someone else would be able to direct me right to the parts.

Also, is there a recommended brake pad for these bikes??

Thanks in advance.

You can get OEM brake pads from about anywhere but I would highly recommend you do a search for stainless steel brake lines from Earls. It should be in the old technical section I think (Nessism posted it) and are pretty inexpensive to make on your own. I like them.

I've used both HEL and Goodridge and for the price I am very pleased with the Goodridge lines. There is nothing wrong with HEL either, but they are a bit pricey. Goodridge do require figuring out the correct fittings, but that is very easy to do. I would contact Z1 if you have any trouble figuring out what you need. Jeff is great help. Ray

Awwwww... found the old thread in the OLD Tech forum... Parts listing and everything. Thanks Ed!!

The Russell lines are nice, too, fit well, look good, maybe a bit spendy, but easily available.

If anyone wants to make their own lines please check this link... http://www.thegsresources.com/_forum/showthread.php?t=114521

I've used both Earl's and Goodrich components before and I much prefer the Earl's. They are easy to customize for length, nice if you are using non-stock handlebars, plus the hose ends are short (unlike many aftermarket premade lines) so it's easy to route the hose away from obstructions. Also, Earl's lines are cheaper than most pre-made lines, and the quality is excellent.

Ed, Thanks for the follow up! I'll be using either Earl's, or Aeroquip and doing them myself. Used to make my own all the time for my racecars.

One question arrises... On our racecars, we always stuck with Stainless Steel for the fittings... however, on this tutorial site: http://www.bwringer.com/gs/brakelines.html, the fittings appear to be the anodized aluminum pieces.

Are the aluminum used by people, or was this just for illustration purposes. Love the look of the colored fittings, but obviously, safety and reliability come first.

I think aluminum fittings are fine as long as they are from a well-known manufacturer and carry the proper certifications.

For example, I have Spiegler lines on two of my bikes, and they use special aluminum fittings that are extremely strong and tough -- the lines are DOT and TUV approved, whereas some aluminum fittings are not.

Hi,

For future reference, from your "mega-welcome":

Brake Lines - Stainless steel lines, stock kits, custom kits

http://www.cyclebrakes.com/html/custom_lines.html

From the Brakes Odds and Ends page on my little website:

Homemade Stainless Brake Lines with Video

I used Goodridge lines from Z1 for my brake upgrade. It worked out nicely. For pads, I use the regular EBC parts, FA36 for the rear and FA51 for the front.

Thank you for your indulgence,

BassCliff

Wow, great price. I just got my new lines installed this weekend. Also canadian made ebay find:

http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/SUZU...rcycles_Parts_Accessories&hash=item19c4155182

Got my order in during a small sale, so it came to $103 total for 4 lines with shipping and a new double banjo bolt. They were made right away, but shipping took about 3 weeks and the canada post tracking number was useless. I'm pestering the guy before I write a review to see if he will offer discounts for any forum members sent his way;)

So I think it worked:D I emailed some feedback and included the link Octain posted of one of the competitors. Here's the important part of the message I got back:

[...] I am willing to do $75.00 including shipping for the set of 4 lines or $85.00 by EXPRESS shipping ( next day ).
Please conatct me direct at havetodoit@hotmail.com and mentioned they have this deal from your forum.
Let me know if you need further info.

Cheers,
Raymond

I believe he still means order through his ebay store, he just prefers his direct email for correspondence. I'll double check, but I think think the alternative is a bit sketchier/frowned upon anyway.

I'm not sure how fast the express is over the border. My standard rate took about 3 weeks, but I was in no rush with all the rain and needing new clutch too.

I have no personal association with this person/company, just a happy customer. I'll post up a short review thread in a bit with a few pics.

Random point: If you are into colors, they have red and blue line too, not just clear and black.

Wow, glad I waited..
So, according to this we should contact him via his email to inform him who we are and we'll get the discount if purchased through ebay?

I got the HEL great lines, shipped from UK. Mine were very cheap !! They never sent the bill !!!

I believe so, but I just sent him an email to make sure. Ebay does offer a little buyer protection, so if that's not what he's thinking I'll just whistle and and walk away and let you guys make that call:-\\\

Shipping was definitely over 2 weeks for me, I think closer to 3. I just figured crossing borders took the extra time. The red looks pretty sweet for those into that sort thing;)

I double checked the thread pitch before ordering:

All my banjo's were the extra fine thread, which agrees with the chart mike posted in that thread. I shared that info with the supplier too. I'm not a huge fan of the new double banjo, it was barely a fraction of a c-hair big enough to cover the inner tolerance of the crush washer. The included single banjo bolts are a better looking flanged design. I'd just clean up and reuse the stock double bolt next time.
