front wheel hub disassembly

so, need to check the bearings on my front wheel cause they're making noises they shouldnt be making, and ran into a roadblock

there's this black plastic cap on the right side that i can't figure out how to remove. part number 10 on https://www.suzukipartshouse.com/oemparts/a/suz/50d3f271f8700230d8b4be30/front-wheel
anyone know how to get this thing off in one piece?

I just pops off, held on with plastic pegs somewhat like on the back of the frame side covers. Just get a flathead screwdriver or better yet, a similar non-marring tool between this plastic piece and the hub. Shouldn’t take much. Road grime may be helping keeping it in place, but not much else. Pry a little at at a time til all three pegs pop loose.

May as well check the speedometer drive as well. Several years ago mine started making sounds that could easily be mistaken for bad bearings.

Yeah... it's not that easy to put the speedo drive back together from memory. You can flush it out with WD40 and then work new grease in without taking it apart. I did that once too.

This is the speedo drive disassembled. Mine was caked with grime and the tabbed round washer-type piece’s inner tabs were worn in a way that made it not positively engage the inner hub of the drive. I thought I had a brilliant idea and hammered the outer tabs 180 degrees to the other side, making the side of each inner tab with the unworn face that engaged the slot in the drive fresh. Sadly, this only worked for one short ride. I ended up buying a nice used drive on eBay for @ $20.

bearings turned out fine. the speedo puck was full of grime and dirt. disassembled it, flushed with wd-40, cleaned with brake cleaner, reassembled and greased and noises went away
