DO NOT SIGN UP USING hotmail, outlook, gmx, sbcglobal, att, bellsouth or email.com. They delete our forum signup emails.

A note to old forum members...
I receive numerous requests from people who can no longer log in because their accounts were deleted. As mentioned in the forum FAQ, user accounts are deleted if you haven't logged in for the past 6 months. If you can't log in, then create a new forum account. If you don't get an error message, then check your email account for an activation message. If you get a message stating that the email address is already in use, then your account still exists so follow the instructions in the forum FAQ for resetting your password.

Have you forgotten your password or have a new email address? Then read the forum FAQ for details on how to reset it.

Any email requests for "can't log in anymore" problems or "lost my password" problems will be deleted. Read the forum FAQ and follow the instructions there - that's what we have one for...

  • Returning Visitors

If you are a returning visitor who never received your confirmation email, then odds are your email provider is blockinig emails from our server. The only thing that can be done to get around this is you will have to try creating another forum account using an email address from another domain.

If you are a returning visitor to the forum and can't log in using your old forum name and password but used to be able to then chances are your account is deleted. Purges of the databases are done regularly. You will have to create a new forum account and you should be all set.

Hi,
my GS 1000 1979 doesn't have the gear position sensor and display.
Is it possible to add one?

cheers

Please look at the GEAR SHIFTING page on a parts fishe such as the GS1000G. You will see that the shift drum has a hole in the end for a spring loaded pin. Then on the outside of the case there is a position indicator switch. If you are up for machining the case and shift drum it may be possible to add the indicator.

I was about to say that I thought that the 1000E might have it, but I checked the fiche, and it does NOT. :-k
I thought that was one of the upgrade features of the "E".

I have been under the impression that virtually all GSes had a gear position indicator, but now I find that the chain-driven 1000s did not. I have learned my new thing for the day, I'm going to bed. :-\\\

Almost all correct. The neutral indicator switch is the same size as the position indicator switch. I'd think they'd interchange. The only internal difference is that the neutral only one has a single contact where the position switch has 5 or 6 depending on the application. Both work off the single spring loaded pin in the end of the shift drum.
Whether you'd want a gear position indicator on an endurance race bike is another question - it's something else to worry a tired rider.
Unless you deliberately put a 6 speed switch on your 5 speed.....( 6 is from the twins) I can imagine the puzzled rider, LOL.

It's also a lot more wiring. 4 extra wires to the gauges - plus find and install the light bar.

I actually went out to the shed and checked on two sets of GS1000 cases as my memory of the setup was in conflict with Nessism's post.
