GS1100GL Exhaust Questions

First post here. I hope this forum is more active than the other Suzuki forum I am on.

I have a 1982 GS1100GL and want to upgrade the exhaust, but I am having difficulty finding exhaust systems and have found nothing but conflicting information about what systems fit/with which models the 1100GL is compatible.

I have found many sites that claim that the 16V 1100E exhaust will fit on the 8V 1100GL, but that seems wrong since the heads are quite different. Then again, I have found just as many sites that say that the 1100E exhaust is indeed different.

What fits and what doesn't? It seems that the V&H system is NLA.

I am fully capable of building my own exhaust out of stainless steel, and it may come to that. But I would rather ride the bike than crawl around and under it.

First, Welcome to GSR. I can't answer your question, but can say the differences in the fit for the 16V head & 8V head should not be the difference. The same head pipes fit both the "80" GS1000E (8V) & an "80" GS1100E (16V). I mounted a 4 into 1 from my buddy's GS1000E on my GS1100E, head pipes fit fine but at the rear, the megaphone wasn't tucked in near the frame, like it was on the GS1000, it stuck out appx. 3" to 4" outside the frame. I would think the differences will be in the frames of the "E", "G", & "GL" models.

Thanks for that. I have seen this system in my numerous searches, but it always makes me hesitate because the applications listing omits the 1100G. I know that 1100 is mentioned, but people seem to mean 1100E when they say only 1100. When I go to Mac's website, I get this listing--with no 1100G:

Thank you. I have seen this manufacturer's system. I am new to motorcycle headers, not new to car headers. The fact that all of the primary tubes are slipped in and held in place with a spring troubles me. The spring will fatigue and relax over time, and I can't see how the system seals very well.

There are four springs. Fatigue won't be an issue.

That MAC pipe looks nice, but it says it's for competition use only. :-k

Also mentions that it has a non-removeable baffle, so there is no way to substitute a quieter baffle.

My son got a MAC tri-Y system for his 1000G last year for a good price. After he told me that he bought it, he tried to show it to me, but it said "discontinued, no longer available", so he apparently got the last one. We modified it a bit by adding a mid-pipe with a bend to put the muffler under the saddlebag, instead of exiting directly in front of it.

1100 16v header fit to a 8v, the spacing is the same.With some exhaust you need to remove a little material on the cooling fins near the stud for the flanges or the spigots.
Most only need a rear bracket to support the canister and if the collector is centered you will loose the center stand.
Delkevic is hard to beat for the price and availability.
I would personally not pay 485$ for a Mac exhaust let alone 100$ even for a new one.

I run a Delkevic on my 850, very nice system and mounted right up and still have the center stand.

I have a Delkevic on an 1100G... not fired it up yet. Fit is good. Had to make my own rear bracket (even though I did buy a 1100G one.., it said 1000E in the box)

The springs are there to prevent fatigue.... as long as the ends can rotate (which they can) they will not break).

I have a Delkevic for a GS 8v here, nice fit and finish for the price.I just don't like the sound of it.
Maybe its just me,i'm used to hear a Bassani.

I have a Vance and Hines that I believe was listed for the 8 and 16 valves in it's day. I only ran it one time because I suspect that the GK exhaust brackets may be different. Despite being their "street" pipe it still wanted to drag pretty quick on the GK. I didn't try experimenting with the GL peg brackets I have.

It just looks more and more like I need to build my own stainless system and forget what is available for my bike. If it doesn't fit perfectly, I'm going to be upset that I spent $500 on something that I could have built for a little less with better craftsmanship and perfect fit.
