As far as I know, only the 1980-1981 GS250, 1980-1982 GS450 and 1980 GS550L will bolt right up. You might be able to modify an igniter from a different model GS and make it work on your GS450.

The only aftermarket part that I know of is Boyer-Brandsen. They're a company in Europe and I think that their kit costs around $300. Send them an email and ask to make sure.

Dyna might make it but I am not sure.

Before you try installing your new unit, I recommend checking EVERYTHING electrical on your bike. This isn't the first time it has happened to you. I guarantee you that it WILL happen again unless you do something about it.

If I were you, I'd just make a brand new wiring harness from scratch with brand new electrical connectors. Use spades. Brand new wiring and brand new electrical connectors will eliminate any suspicions towards the wiring harness...

Then check the components. Check the ignition coils (upgrade to Dyna?) and upgrade your R/R if you haven't done so.

It might be a bit anal but I'm just saying that that's what I would do.

Good luck!

Sounds like GOOD advice to me.

You may be able to convert a DYNA S. Make some enquiries. They are only $133 a set from Z1.

Thanks!!!!
those ignitors didn't come up when I searched so thanks alot for the links.
I emailed dyna and they said there wasnt a unit for the gs450. It looked like they only had 4 cycle units, is it possible it work for a 2 cylinder bike?
I made the mistake of getting a used R/R last time my ignitor blew, but i finally learned my lesson. Ill definitely get an upgraded one this time, where can I find one?
Thanks again for the help!

Just for completeness, according to the Dynatek web site, the DS3-3C for $US309.99 is listed as "Dyna S Ignition System for Suzuki GS 400 Twin w/ Coils".

I'm guessing this means it'll be ok for the 450's, but you'd need to confirm with Dynatek.

Note it appears using it with the OEM coils is not an option which is why it's more expensive than the others as it comes with the coils.

Thanks!
I emailed dyna to see if the set for the GS400 would work and they said no :(

Really? That's weird! Did they tell you what 400 twins it's designed for? Maybe it's designed as a points replacement for the early twins before they put electronic ignition in? If so, it should be compatible...

I always found that odd (seems like it should work but Dyna only lists the 400), but figured we'd have to wait until someone was willing to shell out the $300 to get a firm answer.

Pete, how has your ignition project worked out?

Yeah it is rather odd, might be worth an email to find out what model it's actually designed to fit and then do some theoretical reverse engineering. It's an expensive test otherwise

I'll have an update on my ignition on 13th August which is when I'll get the opportunity to kick her over again. New exhaust, have the K&N's mounted, and a new multimeter with dwell angle measurement all set to go, just gotta finish up how to connect a battery to the relocated electrics.

Ok, just emailed to ask what model and year 400's it's designed for, wait and see what they say I guess...

Indeed, no reply yet but I have no idea what time of the night/day it is or how fast/slow they respond to emails... maybe they'll just ignore the Aussie idiot? haha

Got my reply. '76 to '80 400's is the official answer, but the 425's use the same points, coils, and advance governor, so it will work in those as well.

Big question remains... will the bolt holes and timing marks line up on the 450's and is the advance curve the same? This will really need someone who knows or has access to both to compare I would think...

In theory if those are the same, the DS3-3C should work for the 450's, and you should be able to put a set of 400 points and coils on a 450 even though you probably wouldn't want to...

cool,
i found a used igntior for 60 so i might go that way.
Where can I find the upgraded R/R eveeryones talking about?:)

Jump onto BassCliff's site and in the electrical odds and ends section somewhere is a list of the Honda R/R's to go for.

Also, I sent a reply back to Dynatek this morning to ask if they'd heard of anyone trying them on a 450.

At this stage it's a no, however I'm mighty impressed with their service! He replied a bit later on and apologised for the delay in replying... the delay was because he found and trawled through my HEI ignitor thread on here looking for more info! How cool is that? That's service I haven't seen for a loooong time...

Anyways, I think the best way forward is for someone with a 400 or 425 with points to do some measuring of the plate for the points, maybe take some pic's, and try to find out what the advance curve is like for them.

I can do the same for my 450, and my factro repro manual it has a bunch of info on the points as well, but of course I don't physically have a set to measure or compare. I think the Clymer and Haynes may have some more info as well as they're supposed to cover more of the twins in general I think.

If those things match up, then it's a pretty good chance the DS3-3C will be a direct swap for the 450's as well, which would be much easier for those not comfortable doing things like making up circuits to fit HEI modules.

I've heard both the Electrosport and Ricks are good, not sure about the other one.

I'll have to start hunting through the Clymer manual actually, as it's for the '77 onwards 400's and 450's, so it should cover both points and electronic ignition and it should have timing info for both I would think...
