    A note to old forum members...
    I receive numerous requests from people who can no longer log in because their accounts were deleted. As mentioned in the forum FAQ, user accounts are deleted if you haven't logged in for the past 6 months. If you can't log in, then create a new forum account. If you don't get an error message, then check your email account for an activation message. If you get a message stating that the email address is already in use, then your account still exists so follow the instructions in the forum FAQ for resetting your password.

    Have you forgotten your password or have a new email address? Then read the forum FAQ for details on how to reset it.

    Any email requests for "can't log in anymore" problems or "lost my password" problems will be deleted. Read the forum FAQ and follow the instructions there - that's what we have one for...

  • Returning Visitors

    If you are a returning visitor who never received your confirmation email, then odds are your email provider is blockinig emails from our server. The only thing that can be done to get around this is you will have to try creating another forum account using an email address from another domain.

    If you are a returning visitor to the forum and can't log in using your old forum name and password but used to be able to then chances are your account is deleted. Purges of the databases are done regularly. You will have to create a new forum account and you should be all set.

What's up folks!

Newly licensed rider and just picked up my first bike - a 1981 GS650G. She rides like a dream! I'm fortunate to have a friend who knows the GS series of bikes very well, and between learning from him, this forum, my clymer manual, and the gracious bikecliff resources - I'm hoping to keep this bike running strong for years to come!

First steps are to replace a ripped seat cover and diagnose/solve some squeaking front brakes.

Stoked to be here!

THanks for the bit of intro, and for the picture.

Bike looks to be all stock. A rareity. And in Great condition.
Black, like the 82 650G I had for 20+ years from new (except the 82s had gold-gold striping).

I had used a Travelcade replacement cover with good results, but doesnt look stock.
Have seen comments on the forum about PitReplica replacement covers that do look stock.

Also notable that a "new rider" and you didnt think you needed a crotch rocket.

Welcome shredder. I like that Redman had a little say about not getting a "crotch rocket" as a new rider. That was me/new rider...getting a Gixxer at 44 years of age...lol!

As for your bike, looks well maintained...just need to handle those unique noises these old bikes make.

Welcome to the Forum! Great looking bike. I have two of them - 1982. The first is a full restoration and the second is in progress and will be a bit of a custom when it is finished.

In reference to your seat I've used a few of the Pit Replica seat covers and find them to be great. They're accurate reproductions that normally go on pretty well if you take your time. In case you decide to get one I would say that the cover for the GS650G is a bit harder to install. It could be a fraction bigger to be able to wrap around the seat pan/foam without stretching it too much. Some have tried heating them up to make it easier with limited results. Do it on a warm day but don't force it as they will rip.

Have fun - ride safe and keep the maintenance up and you'll have years of fun ahead of you!

Welcome to the forum. This is where you want to be for that nice looking bike. Ditto on being careful installing the seat cover as I have ripped one myself in the process.
 
You guys are awesome! Thanks for all the kind words. My first two weeks on a bike have been life changing - I feel reborn, to say the least.

And thank you for the seat recommendations. Pit Replicas look awesome and as close to original as I can find. I think I'll go for them. It seems they have two options for my ride.. an EU Market long seat model at 67cmand also a short seat US model at 63cm.. My bike is a US model (I think..) but it's measurements are more in line with the EU model (measurments from top front edge to rear edge according to Pit Replica).. So I think that's probably what I'll end up going for.

Interesting note about the short seat model.

Pit Replica is great at making up covers from versions sent to them, and it could be they are listing it on incorrect information. Some models (E) have a flat seat, but as far as I know the "G" only came with the stepped version. That could makeup the difference of 4 cm.

Then there was the 650M, which sometimes shows up as a 650G in Europe...a completely different kettle of fish.

Nice bike, I like stock ones and your's is right on. You're right, BassCliff's pages kept me out of trouble so far. I strongly believe everything is in there!

For what it's worth, my 1983 GS650G seat is just under 69 cm from front to back. The cover is original, slightly torn and a bit stretched. I bought a Saddleman cover ages ago that measures 67 cm from front to back.
