so i have been looking at pictures from the gs850 and gs1000 and more specifically about the overall look of the two i notice that the 850 has a crank cover guard (those loops that come out to protect it from a drop.) now does every 1000 owner remove them or is it the 850 is considered a touring style and the 850 comes with it and the 1000 doesn't? Is there a difference in the motor width and thats why it would have the bars? i have a 850 and going more for the look like gs1000 is his name here and would like to remove those? i know nothing is stopping me from removing them just curios why the difference.

My 1000 had them when I bought and it still does. Folks pay some good money for those guards. I wouldn't be without them. Also, my understanding is that there is no diff in the frame or engine width between the 850 and the 1000.

Thanks,

I think those bars you refer to are what we would call 'crash bars' in the UK. They're not standard fitment on any of the bikes and you will find some GS1000s with them. Some were made by Suzuki as an additional extra and some are by other manufacturers.

They're just crash guards/case savers to keep the side covers and motor from getting scratched if the bike winds up on its side. They do limit cornering ground clearance however.

80gs1000 you are my bike hero, ever since I've seen the new pictures of your bike I've wanted that. I'm working with what i got and no money is where I'm at BUT!!! I'm looking into options. I'm not going to copy you so don't worry i hate people that don't put touches on things to define it as yours, but i love the new front forks and the shocks in the back, as look wise and performance and the paint scheme you went with was awesome and the lines of the bike are great.

I agree, LOVE that bike. I have plans for a chain drive bike with some GSXR mods like that in the near future.

Yup. Dennis Kirk still sells case guards for the 850+ shafties for about $135.

I don't think they limit cornering clearance unless you've replaced the exhaust with a tucked-in 4/1 and installed rearsets. On a stock 850/1000/1100G, the centerstand on the left and the footpeg on the right are the first things to drag, and the exhaust is next on both sides.

Note the centerstand is close to touching down here:

I'm pretty sure the story is the same on the GL models, too.

Then again, I didn't have case guards installed at the time of this photo. I did finally install a set about a month ago, but I haven't had the chance to do much hard cornering since then.

Brian, I am far from YOU, but the only thing ive ever drug on my 1100G was the highway peg brackets on the case savers. I think about the time you'd really get into THOSE, you'd be dragging the centrestand arm anyway. With the caseguards alone, looking at them, you'd probably be pretty close to on your way to a lowside to drag those with any real effort.

Right after this pic was taken when the bike was stock-ish I installed a set of Pirelli Sport Demons. I used to bang the case savers, and the pegs, and the rear brake lever on the pavement all the time in the twisties. So I got rid of the the savers and installed rearsets.

Hope I don't sound big-headed () by saying I tend to corner a tad harder and faster than your average rider, racing this weekend as a matter of fact. So if you're not a big twisties junkie you might not run into a ground clearance issue with GS case guards.

I've got Pirelli Sport Demons my 81 gs1000g and use all but 1/8 inch on each side and have never had my case savers drag.

Thanks,

Greg
